Witch… are they calling me a witch now?

“Witch! I asked if the witch is alright!”

“Uh, um, I’m not a witch… though,” Sarubia responded hesitantly.

The toad scratched its swollen belly with its front leg and tilted its head, puzzled.

“Lies. Why would the witch lie?”

“I’m not… lying…”

“The Demon King. I can smell the Demon King on you, Witch.”

With that, the toad leaped onto Sarubia’s head.

“We’ve come to rescue you. We’ve come to save the witch.”

“…”

Sarubia was left speechless. She had no idea what was going on. Why were these red toads calling her a witch? And why did they claim she smelled of the Demon King?

But Sarubia didn’t have time to ponder her confusion. The toad monsters suddenly charged toward Prince Camus.

“You filthy creatures!”

Camus unleashed his magic at the swarm of toads rushing toward him.

Squeals filled the air as several toads were hit by the magic, flying through the air and crashing to the ground. Blue blood spurted from their bodies, staining the earth.

‘…Blue blood?’

Sarubia, who had been frozen in place, instinctively covered her nose. The stench was overwhelming, rising suddenly into the air.

Perhaps out of fear of revealing his location to the search party, Prince Camus’s magic wasn’t as strong as it could be. He only managed to strike down five or six of the toads. But that was enough to enrage the rest of the swarm.

Croak, croak!

The toads, furious at the death of their comrades, swelled up, their bodies expanding until they were as menacing as a club. In an instant, hundreds of toad monsters surged toward Prince Camus.

Startled, Camus summoned his magic once more.

Squeal!

A toad exploded in midair, showering blue blood over the prince’s face.

“Argh!”

Covered in the toad’s poisonous blood, Camus stumbled backward. The sight that followed was horrifying. His skin began to corrode, as if it were melting. Black spots spread rapidly across his body, seeping through his melting fingers.

Sarubia stared blankly at the prince.

‘What… is that?’

It was a scene unlike anything she had ever witnessed before.

Though Sarubia had heard vague rumors about monsters, she had never encountered one before. And now she finally understood why people warned against venturing into the woods at night without magic.

The miasma of the monsters.

It was the same toxin used in the most potent poisons. And it was devastating.

“You cursed creatures…!”

Struggling to hold back the fatal effects of the poison, Camus lashed out with more magic. But the toad monsters were relentless.

Croak, croak!

Smeared with the blue blood of their fallen comrades, the toads didn’t falter. They continued to charge at the prince. When one wave of toads was knocked back, another surged forward, as if they were regenerating. Though individually weak, their coordinated assault was overwhelming.

But despite the poisoning, Prince Camus was still royalty. His fingers sparked with magic, wrapping around the toads. Unable to withstand the magical pressure, the monsters fell to the ground, one after another.

Camus dealt with each of the attacking monsters without missing a beat. It was only a matter of time before he eradicated all of them.

‘…’

Watching the battle between Prince Camus and the toad monsters, Sarubia snapped back to her senses and dashed toward the fallen dagger. The toad that had been perched on her head squealed and fell to the ground with a splat, but Sarubia ignored it.

She reached the blood-stained dagger. The cold metal seemed to seep into her palm like a curse.

It was the trigger.

Sarubia gripped the dagger and ran toward Prince Camus, trampling over the corpses of the toads.

Her shoes disintegrated as they came into contact with the miasma. The skin on her feet burned, as if it had been scorched.

Her legs wobbled, but she couldn’t stop.

She forced her body, on the verge of collapse, to keep moving. Raising the dagger high above her head, she struck with all her might.

At that moment, the prince’s blood sprayed into the air.

The blade pierced through his bones, striking straight into his heart. The sudden silence in the forest was deafening.

“A-Ah…”

Prince Camus, staggering like a withered tree, widened his eyes in shock. Blood dripped from the end of the dagger Sarubia had pulled out, and the prince’s bloodshot eyes stared at her, questioning.

It was as if he were asking, Why are you killing me?

But Sarubia couldn’t answer that question, nor did she need to. Everything was simply unfolding according to the prophecy.

With a dull thud, Camus’s lifeless body collapsed to the ground. The toads swarmed over his corpse immediately.
