Chapter 73

Arietta gave a hollow laugh. With a frigid expression, she looked down at the young man before her. He’d begrudgingly saved her, and now, inexplicably, he wanted to hear her story. Every second was precious; she was itching to die for Isaac.

From downstairs, a murmur of voices reached her ears. It seemed many people were in the house, which meant the day’s investigation was over. If the Relic Investigation Team was back at their quarters, then Isaac had also returned to the Glass Dome. This realization made Arietta slightly anxious.

Isaac might come looking for her if he discovered she was missing. If she were returned to the Glass Dome mansion, all her plans would unravel. She might not get another chance to try again until New Year’s Eve. Isaac wasn’t one to tolerate four attempts. No matter how easily Arietta gained the upper hand in their psychological battles, within the Glass Dome mansion, he was her master. She was his prized possession. If her actions were restricted, she would be helpless. She had already used the most provocative method, the one most likely to unsettle Isaac.

Emerald eyes looked up at her. Arietta had never seen a true emerald, but she had a fleeting thought that the word, gleaned from books, perfectly described the young man’s gaze. He didn’t seem like the type to back down if pressed. There was a strange stubbornness, a quiet resolve about him. Finally, Arietta decided to offer a brief explanation. She brushed her hair back a few times. “My love was unrequited.”

It was a good enough answer. It didn’t fully explain why she wanted to die, but it wasn’t entirely wrong to say that love was the problem. And well, since she was killed by Isaac every New Year’s Eve, it wasn’t completely untrue either. More importantly, Benjamin seemed to accept it. Women heartbroken by love were a dime a dozen.

As Arietta predicted, he didn’t press for further details. He simply gaped at her in astonishment. “Someone doesn’t love you?”

Benjamin couldn’t hide his surprise. She was beautiful, as if the Creator had taken extra care in crafting her. Just looking at her was captivating; touching her, he imagined, would be like being burned or melted. He knew it would be dangerous, yet he felt drawn to her like a moth to a flame. If she was this captivating now, in her coldness, he could only wonder how sweet it would be to be loved by her. Consumed by the infatuation that comes with instant captivation, Benjamin stared at Arietta. What kind of idiot wouldn’t reciprocate her love? Surely, it must be some Downstream lout, lacking in taste, manners, and basic decency.

Arietta, observing Benjamin’s reaction, lost all motivation. She came to the reasonable conclusion that she wouldn’t be able to accomplish anything while this young man was around. Her long, pale legs disappeared back under the covers.

‘I thought I would kill whoever rescued me…’

***

The day after Arietta awoke, Benjamin was not himself. He was still diligently performing his duties as a member of the Remains Investigation Team. Though arrogant, Benjamin was the type to fulfill his responsibilities and confine his arrogance within those boundaries. His work was as impeccable as ever, but the passion he usually poured into it was now directed elsewhere.
