Chapter 192

How did it come to be that Cain Vernat, the epitome of dignity and nobility, found himself sneaking glances at his wife to avoid angering her?
Lehman, who didn’t understand the emotional gap between the two, couldn’t make sense of Cain’s unusual behavior. Moreover, he too found himself half-hiding behind a wall with Cain, both spying on the Madam’s bedroom.
Swallowing his words, Lehman peered over Cain’s shoulder.
At that moment, the door to the Madam’s bedroom, which had been firmly shut, creaked open. Sensing movement, Cain quickly concealed himself completely behind the wall. He then listened intently to the sound of footsteps, most likely belonging to the Madam and her maid.
After the footsteps faded from the corridor, Lehman slowly began to move.
“Commander, it seems Madam has gone downstairs.”
“Hmm.”
Cain straightened up with a slightly awkward expression, belatedly realizing how ridiculous he must have looked, spying on his wife from such a distance.
“Rather than spying from a distance, wouldn’t it be better to do something the Madam enjoys to calm her down?”
“Spying? What are you talking about?”
Cain quickly denied what had just happened with a serious expression. He turned his head away as his ears turned slightly red. He hadn’t meant to show his subordinate such a side of him, which left him feeling embarrassed.
Lehman sighed inside, wondering how someone so adept at hiding his emotions had come to this point.
Having floated around Agatha’s presence like the surrounding air, Cain had been stuck on the island for about ten days. Finally, he could leave with Agatha, who was going to finish what she couldn’t last time: shopping.
In just a few days, the Vernat knights had fully recovered their energy and seemed genuinely happy to accompany Cain for this outing.
The island was peaceful. Pahel had always been a quiet town, but since it was a place that could only be reached by boat, the island felt even more isolated. The stillness could almost be felt.
It was an ideal place for relaxation and peace, but for the energetic knights, it was dull and monotonous.
Though it was just a small port a few minutes away by boat, the knights were clearly excited to get out and explore after such a long time in the same place. Despite Charlotte’s insistence that there was little risk, the members of the Vernat Knights shook their heads and made sure to arm themselves fully.
They had already seen how recklessly the mercenaries let loose by Count Schuck were roaming the area.
“Hey, Marquis.”
There was a rough voice calling out to stop Cain as he tried to follow Agatha’s steps. Turning around, he saw Rubens glaring at him with an annoyed expression.
After being briefly detained by Count Schuck, Rubens had arrived at Borgia’s mansion with Cain. Of course, Agatha’s maid, Liana, who had always been by her side during their marriage, was also with them.
Although Agatha had spent her time in the pleasant surroundings, worrying about Liana’s absence, she finally seemed to have found peace. With Charlotte, whom she considered a mother, on one side, and Liana, whom she considered a sister, on the other, Agatha looked as content as could be.
Unlike Charlotte, who occasionally came over to speak with him and check if he was comfortable, Liana, like Agatha, treated Cain as if he was invisible.
This behavior, which could seem a bit presumptuous, was defended by Charlotte, but it was clear that Liana did not seem to want to forgive the foolish Marquis who had made things difficult for her mistress.
Even though she had heard from Agatha that Esther wasn’t Cain’s lover, it didn’t seem to change Liana’s feelings.
“Yes, Sir Rubens.”
Cain answered absently, his gaze still following Agatha.
He had no time or energy for any casual conversation with him. He had left all the duties and tasks assigned by the Emperor to Ethan when he had come down here, but he couldn’t stay here forever.
Ethan was a highly capable man and would certainly handle everything brilliantly, but if he stayed here for too long, there was no telling when the Emperor might issue a decree.
“When will this stop?”
“What do you mean?”
“How long will you keep this up? Trailing around like a pesky rat, following someone who doesn’t even want you here, in this place where there’s no one to welcome you?”
It was an unnecessarily harsh comment. Immediately, the Vernat knights could have drawn their swords in response. Even Lehman, who rarely showed emotion, raised an eyebrow at Rubens’ words, but Cain seemed uninterested in the remark.
“Did it look like that?”
Agatha turned a corner and disappeared. While there were several of Kristin’s knights following her, Cain still felt uneasy. As he tried to move, Rubens blocked his path with his massive build.
“You don’t have to follow her so closely. Do you not trust Kristin’s knights, who are so capable?”
“I know they’re good. But that’s beside the point. I need to see her with my own eyes to be at ease.”
