Chapter 216

“Th-that’s impossible! How could that be…?”
“But why did my mother have to suffer such a brutal violation at the hands of a beast like you?”
“N-no… how could you be from Amasril? And a royal family of Amasril…?”
“You won’t die easily.”
“How? How could you have hidden your identity? Such a terrible secret.”
“Honestly, I want to slowly cut off your limbs one by one until you’d rather be dead.”
“The Amasril royalty should have been the last. Or so I thought she was the last! That’s why the Grand Duke ordered her death.”
The Count mentioned the Grand Duke’s name without realizing it and immediately closed his mouth, but it was too late. Cain had caught the word ‘Grand Duke’.
“…The Grand Duke ordered her death?”
Cain’s voice alone seemed capable of killing. The Count, crushed by Cain’s presence, spat blood once more.
“Cough, cough! Y-yes! It wasn’t me, it was the Grand Duke. Everything from bringing the slave to killing her was under His Grace’s orders. Marquis, you’ve chosen the wrong target for revenge. Your true enemy is not me, but the Grand Duke…!”
The Count seemed to cling to the faint hope that blaming the Grand Duke would save him. Despite coughing up blood, he kept speaking.
“Cough… the Grand Duke. I only followed his orders!”
“You say the Grand Duke brought in the Amasril refugees as slaves?”
“Even so! How could I refuse when the Grand Duke personally gifted them?”
“For that reason, you kept my mother locked in your bedroom for a long time.”
“T-that was because… she was foreign royalty, so my curiosity was piqued…”
“I’ll ask again. Answer clearly. Is Grand Duke Norfolk the one who broke imperial law to bring the Amasril royalty here as slaves?”
“Yes! How many times must I say it, damn it!”
“Was there anyone else who helped him traffic the refugees as slaves?”
“Who else could it be? Everyone knows it was Grand Duke Norfolk’s doing.”
He had hoped that Kristin’s name would come up. But the Count mentioned only the Grand Duke’s name, not Duke Kristin.
Was the late Duke really uninvolved? Or was the Count trying to protect him?
Cain narrowed his eyes, pondering.
“When did the Grand Duke begin trafficking refugees from foreign lands?”
“How should I know! Was the slave brought to me the first? Or did he recruit nobles like this before? Who knows?”
“You know nothing… Sounds like you’re completely useless.”
Cain turned away without hesitation and rose. As Marquis Vernat lost interest and withdrew, the fear on the Count’s face deepened.
“Consider yourself lucky you have little time left here.”
“Y-yes…?”
“If I had more time, I’d slowly carve you apart, limb by limb, with unbearable pain.”
“P-please, Your Grace, spare me!”
“I’ll spare you.”
“T-thank you!”
“Until dawn.”
“W-what…?”
The Count’s voice briefly brightened with hope but quickly drowned in despair.
“I’ll spare you until dawn. Killing you immediately would be too merciful.”
Facing a reaper from hell, Cain, his chilling smile terrified not only the Count but even the knights who had witnessed his ruthless battles.
Is this what it looks like when human anger breaks all limits? The extent of the rage hidden behind that cold smile was unimaginable.
“Deal with him.”
“Yes, Commander.”
Cain left without hesitation, leaving the Count behind, radiating a freezing aura.
The enemy who killed his mother—Cain had considered personally staining his hands with the Count’s blood but instead chose to leave that to the countless oppressed people of Pahel.
To die cleanly would be a mercy and a blessing.
Giving a beast like him a chance to die like a human was wrong, Cain thought.
He wished the Count would fear the inevitable death and writhe in pain—even if just for a few hours.
Aleini and the knights quickly bound the Count with ropes as Cain exited the manor.
“Why… why are you doing this?”
“Shut his mouth.”
His freedom to speak was over. At Aleini’s order, a knight swiftly gagged the Count.
“Ugh! Mmm!”
