Chapter 222

“There-there’s no specific treatment. And we can’t just recklessly use medicine…”
“So you can’t do anything right now?”
“Yes…”
Sweat dripped down the doctor’s forehead. His anxious eyes darted nervously.
Rubens opened his mouth to say more but was stopped by Karon. If there’s no cure, what good is pressuring the doctor?
“Oh, I heard you came by ship.”
The doctor stopped Rubens who was about to leave.
“You shouldn’t take the ship again. It seems she suffered severe seasickness. You must avoid anything that could upset the baby further.”
“What? We can’t take the ship?”
“Yes. She must rest and avoid unnecessary movement. If that’s impossible, at least avoid sea travel.”
This was the only useful advice from the otherwise helpless doctor—no more sailing until delivery.
“Enough for now. Let him go.”
“Yes, Sir Karon.”
The doctor returned to where he was brought, guarded by knights. Rubens grumbled with frustration at wasting time on an ineffective doctor.
Before leaving, the doctor gave the names of some calming herbs—easy to find locally, which was fortunate.
<If these herbs cause harm or worsen her condition, know you’ll be doomed too.>
Muttering to himself, Rubens noted how suspicious it was to trust a rural doctor’s prescriptions. The doctor’s trembling hands were noticeable as he wrote on paper.
Charlotte and Lehman immediately went to the nearby market to buy herbs. For those unavailable, knights were sent to gather from the mountains.
“Miss shouldn’t travel by ship again. From now on, we must use carriages for any movement.”
Charlotte’s firm warning came after checking on Agatha resting peacefully—something rare these days. She insisted on minimal movement, solely for Agatha’s sake.
They couldn’t deliver in this place, so they’d have to move to Kristin’s territory eventually—but absolutely no more sea travel.
Karon understood Charlotte’s point but worried about meeting Cain. If they left here by carriage to Arta, they might miss Cain joining Kristin’s knights by fast ship.
Even staying here, he worried Cain might pass by unnoticed. If they gave up sea travel and took carriage again…
“What is there to worry about? As Kristin’s knights, your duty is only to Kristin.”
Charlotte seemed irritated by Karon’s hesitation. They were clearly advised not to use ships.
“The original plan was to meet the Marquis at sea again, but is following the plan more important than protecting Kristin’s lady?”
“No.”
“Then what is it you worry about, Sir Karon?”
“Of course, I understand that resting here as long as possible and moving slowly by carriage is best. My concern isn’t missing the Marquis but encountering a situation where we need his troops.”
“How long would it take to reach Arta by carriage from here?”
“At best, a month. Probably longer if delayed.”
“So you’d rather risk going into known danger to avoid uncertain risk during that month?”
“No.”
“Then do as I say. Travel by carriage.”
Charlotte was absolutely right. Traveling by carriage might or might not bring situations needing Vernat’s forces, but sea travel would definitely harm Agatha. Why hesitate?
Karon made a quick decision.
“Yes. We’ll travel by carriage. First, we’ll rest here as much as possible. Knights will be stationed outside the lodging, disguised in plain clothes to guard Her Grace discreetly.”
They found the cleanest, largest flophouse nearby, though it wasn’t a busy area, raising concerns about attracting attention.
“Yes. A very wise choice.”
After speaking with Karon, Charlotte returned to Agatha’s sleeping room.
After disembarking and spending a full day on land, Agatha rested utterly still in bed.
“Miss, how do you feel?”
Without strength to answer, she lay quietly. Charlotte checked her complexion, then quietly left the room.
