Chapter 114
“The weather’s nice today.”
Yuseol, who had no interest in the weather, brought up the topic. As always, she planned to exchange a few words and then escape to her room if he responded.
But he didn’t react, and Yuseol’s uneasy gaze turned to the eaves. Just as she had said the weather was nice, the sky was a clear, cloudless blue.
She felt a little better and looked at him again. A stimulus the exact opposite of the clear sky entered her vision. It was the man’s well-built body. After looking at his narrow hips compared to his broad upper body, Yuseol turned her gaze to his face.
Even in the dark, his pale, bright complexion was the first thing that caught her eye. That complexion alone suited the words “clear” and “harmless” well. However, unlike most people who become dark-skinned when they’re tired, the problem was the reddish tint around his eyes.
Yuseol lowered her gaze to the floor, drawn by his eyes. Her mind instantly felt at ease, but her thoughts were complicated. He hadn’t said a word. She secretly felt uneasy, wondering if he had overheard her conversation with Yanghui, though it would be a relief if he just didn’t want to talk.
No….
Wouldn’t it be even stranger if she cared about that? After all, he wouldn’t care about anything.
He was a person who enjoyed interesting things until it was time to leave. This situation would just be another fun spectacle for him, wouldn’t it?
At that moment, he belatedly gazed at the sky and rubbed his ear. The earring hung from his long index finger and jingled. It was Geon’s, which he had not yet returned.
The fact that he had taken Geon came to her mind. So did the image of him back then, when he was even colder. For some reason, she could picture him turning away and leaving coldly when the time came. She felt an overwhelming sense of emptiness.
“Did you come out for a walk?”
She said something different from what she felt and looked down at the floor. His gaze, which had been on the sky, turned to her. She bit her lower lip, waiting for the answer that wouldn’t come today, either. Her daily conversation with him seemed to have failed again.
“Well, I’ll go inside now.”
The noisy pounding of the mortar stopped. Yanghui placed the pestle on a tray and glanced between Yuseol and Mu-yeong. Then, as if she had thought of something else to do, she hurried toward the pantry.
Mu-yeong spoke in a low voice to Yuseol, who was about to leave in that short time.
“No, come here.”
His eyes felt unusually dark. That’s why he seemed more attractive, and that’s why she didn’t want to go near him.
Yuseol looked at her door and answered.
“I have a lot to do.”
A small laugh was carried on the breeze from inside the room.
“Things to do? Like being adored?”
Yuseol, who had stepped slightly away from the wooden floor, faltered and stopped.
She couldn’t go to her room, and she couldn’t stand in front of him. She just kept thinking that he must have heard her talking about Kim Seon.
It wasn’t something to get so worked up about, but her cheeks felt hot. It was probably because it was a conversation she didn’t want him to hear.
“Is there something wrong with that?”
She said something that was once again different from what she felt. This time, it wasn’t a calculated remark; it was as if someone else was inside her.
She felt like crying, unable to understand the reason or control it. She soon fled into the room and sat down in front of her desk.
She spent a long time fanning her face with her hand, as her cheeks were hot with embarrassment. A thought crossed her mind that she might look like a woman without any pride in his eyes. She had, after all, spoken as if her goal was still to get attention from the man who had abandoned her.
The room grew dark. It seemed clouds had covered the sky. Yuseol’s eyes examined the doorway. The shadow cast in the doorway resembled Mu-yeong.
Yuseol was filled with complicated emotions. Her heart pounded, then sank, and then fluttered again. She felt like she was getting strange. Starting with her inability to take her eyes off the shadow that resembled him.
She closed her eyes as if to escape. She heard footsteps coming onto the wooden floor. It seemed Yanghui had returned after finishing her work. Yuseol opened her eyes and put the teacup, which she had placed at the edge of the desk, back in its place.
At that moment, Yanghui’s voice was heard from the doorway.
“My lord? Is there something you wanted to say?”
The shadow, which she had thought was from the eaves, moved. Yuseol’s eyes widened. In the silence that followed, Mu-yeong’s low voice was heard.
“Later.”
The dark doorway began to brighten. Yuseol’s gaze followed the shadow as it began to move away. She liked bright things, but this moment refused to stop. She felt sad when the darkness completely lifted.
Yanghui, holding a tray, came in and looked back at the doorway.
“The my lord was just at the door, but he just left.”
“…….”
“That’s strange. He’s not the kind of person who would come without a reason, nor is he the kind of person who would just turn back….”
Yuseol answered calmly.
“It seems he thought of something more urgent and went on his way.”
