- Chapter 101 - A Place to Graze for a While
For a moment, Ruby softened looking at the baby’s eyes which seemed to be opening with a glimmer of love. The baby seemed determined to hold its mother’s gaze, a strong will shining through.
“It’s a boy. When he grows up, he might cause quite a bit of trouble.”
“Yes, he was the eldest son.”
“Such beautiful yellow eyes, like stars.”
“…Yes, yes, they are. Sniff.”
Julia couldn’t help but let the tears flow once more. People around her had always told her to forget about the dead child. Her husband also forbade any mention of the child. Julia couldn’t reminisce about her lost child with anyone.
Ruby complimenting her baby made Julia feel an overwhelming gratitude she couldn’t express in words.
“Oh, don’t go back into the mansion. Just leave.”
“Wh-why not?”
“I’ve put up a barrier there. If you go in, you might lose your baby again.”
At those words, Julia was able to understand Ruby’s actions from earlier. Julia opened her mouth in surprise, then bit her lip tightly and bowed politely in gratitude.
“I will surely repay this kindness.”
“No need. Really.”
“Haha, you’re truly unique, my Lady.”
“I just don’t like granting other requests, so don’t take this as a favor.”
“I see. And I will definitely keep this a secret.”
“The Duke gave the order, so we’d better honor it.”
“Well then, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll take my leave now.”
Julia was in a hurry. As she turned to walk away, she realized she’d forgotten something important.
“I am the wife of Baron Voight. If you ever need anything, please be sure to send a letter!”
With those words, Julia turned and hurried away. Ruby silently watched her retreating figure, and just then, Jack approached and asked.
‘Big sis, how much longer do I have to wait?’
“You brought this upon yourself. If you had let go of your attachment earlier and left, you wouldn’t have to wait.”
‘But I want to be reborn as big brother’s child.’
“Do you like him that much?”
At Ruby’s question, Jack smiled brightly and nodded enthusiastically.
‘I love big brother the most in the world!’
“Then wait a little longer.”
‘Well, since he’s married… so, soon, right?’
And if everything goes according to the beastfolk’s wishes, the world would be peaceful.”
‘Tch. Just go along with it.’
Ruby gently patted Jack’s head as he pouted and said:
“In your next life, be born healthy.”
‘…Yeah.’
“Then, I’m in a bit of a hurry, so I’ll be going.”
‘Bye!’
Ruby waved her hand at Jack before quickly heading toward the mansion.
Normally, she would have gone to the office to ask Mael, but considering Julia’s situation, it seemed better to also stop by Liam’s place.
She clicked her tongue as she saw the restless spirits gathered in front of the back gate.
“Persistent, so persistent.”
Thinking about it, the Duke’s family didn’t seem to have any spiritual abilities. If she hadn’t come here, what would those spirits have done to Ivan?
Just that fleeting thought soured her mood. Her crimson eyes, now dull and low, coldly scanned the spirits.
With just a single glance from her, the spirits scattered, startled, shouting and fleeing. Perhaps because of the spirits she had eradicated when she cast the last barrier, they seemed to be excessively afraid of her.
As Ruby confirmed the spirits’ disappearance, she was about to cross the back gate when someone’s voice made her stop and turn around.
“Are you perhaps a visitor from out of town?”
In a place filled with black-haired people, Ruby stood out with her pink hair and even had her beastkin ears exposed, yet the question was still asked. There could only be one reason for it.
It was a move to initiate a clear conversation.
“Nice to meet you. I am Isabelle, the daughter of the Count Morado family.”
