After several days of doing nothing but resting, Ruby blearily opened her eyes to a hand gently shaking her awake. Lately, Ivan had been going out alone every day, but this morning, he was looking down at her.
“Mmm… what is it…”
“You’re still not fully awake.”
“Yeah…”
Her dragging voice sounded like she might fall back asleep any second, so Ivan had no choice but to pull back the covers.
“Nooo…”
“I know you can’t sleep once the blanket’s off. So let’s be good and get up, alright?”
“Whyyy…”
“Pouting won’t work, so get up and wash your face first.”
At his merciless insistence, Ruby had no choice but to sit up. As soon as she washed her face with the water Liam had brought, she took the clothes Ivan handed her and went into the dressing room.
It was only then that she noticed what he’d brought her was a maid’s uniform. Perhaps it had been newly tailored—the hem was longer than before, and the neckline came all the way up to her throat.
“Hmm…”
The chest area still felt tight and constricting, but she didn’t bother asking for a different size. She had at least that much pride.
She wore what she was given, ate what was served, and slept where she was told. Perhaps it was because of her easygoing nature that neither Ivan nor Liam found her difficult to be around.
The truth was, Ivan would have granted her nearly anything she wanted, but knowing her position well, Ruby never made demands.
As soon as she came out dressed, Ivan stood up from the sofa.
“Let’s get breakfast first.”
“Yes.”
“Ruby, starting today, you’ll be attending to me.”
“Alright.”
“I’m going to inspect the estate today.”
“Ahh.”
Realizing now why Ivan had woken her up so early, Ruby nodded. As they chatted and made their way to the dining room, Ruby spotted two people who had arrived before them.
“Big sis!”
Alex greeted her cheerfully the moment he saw her.
“Lex, you rascal.,” said Isabelle. “You saw Ruby before you saw me?”
“Hehe, no way! I was just about to greet you too!”
“Good morning, brother.”
“Yeah.”
Isabelle also offered Ruby a greeting.
“Good morning, Lady Rosa.”
“Yes, Lady Morado, young master. Good morning to you both.”
As usual, Ivan naturally pulled out her chair, and Ruby sat down. But as she did, a sudden thought struck her — she had come to expect him to pull out her chair for her, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
But was it really okay for a personal maid to sit and eat with her master?
As she stared off blankly, lost in thought, Alex, seated across from her, sneaked a curious glance her way.
“Alex,” said Ivan.
“Yes, big brother.”
“If you have something to ask Ruby, just ask. Staring like that isn’t a good habit.”
“Ah, yes! Then… big sister Bunny, do you really only eat vegetables?”
Ruby, happily munching on her salad, pointed to the plate in front of her in response to the child’s question.
“Whoa, it really is only vegetables… You don’t eat meat at all?”
“Well, if I did, wouldn’t that make me a carnivorous beastkin, not a herbivorous one?”
“Hehe, you’re right!”
For some reason, Alex couldn’t stop smiling throughout the entire meal. Whatever amused him so much, he giggled between bites, eyes gleaming with joy.
In contrast, Isabelle barely touched her food, her expression stiff with discomfort like something sat heavily on her mind.
Ruby, on the other hand, cleared her plate with her usual tidy efficiency.
Ivan, casually spearing a few leftover vegetables from his own plate, brought them to Ruby’s lips without a second thought. She, just as naturally, accepted the bite without hesitation, not even pausing to think about it.
At that moment, Liam appeared quietly beside them.
