Chapter 131

They were so heavy that, although Count Morado kept speaking beside her, she could barely hear him.
Just then, a large hand covered her eyes. Then a low voice whispered, and strangely, that voice came through clear and plain.
“You can sleep if you’re tired.”
At those reassuring words, Ruby let her heavy eyelids close. As she slumped over, Ivan caught her up in his arms with practiced ease.
“She’ll be all right, won’t she?”
At Count Morado’s worry, Ivan let out a quiet laugh and said:
“You owe Ruby a great debt.”
“You’re right. Truly, if the young lady hadn’t been at the ducal house, I shudder to think what would have happened.”
“And I, by contrast… I brought harm to you. If Alex hadn’t stayed at the ducal house, none of this would have happened. I’ll take responsibility until Alex has fully recovered.”
“This is not for you to take responsibility for, Alpha. This is all because of…”
Count Morado had heard the gist of the situation from Liam: that the Serpent Tribe was suspected as the culprits who had buried the cursed doll.
And through today’s events, that suspicion toward the Serpent Tribe had hardened into certainty.
“Yes, it’s the work of those Serpent tribe bastards.”
Ivan ground his teeth. If Ruby had been awake, she would have licked his lips. He felt a touch of regret over that, but he didn’t want her to wake on its account.
“I’ve sent out a search party, so they’ll bring back something.”
“It will be hard for them to slip past our Wolf tribe’s search party.”
“Right. Then let’s save the details for after the search party returns.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
Ivan shifted his hold on Ruby and gathered her carefully into his arms. The figure she had shown today looked as ethereal as when she had raised the barrier.
Recalling that earlier sight, Ivan once more held the woman in his arms tightly. Every time she wielded her power as she had today, for some reason he felt an unease that she might simply vanish on the spot.
Back in his own room, Ivan laid Ruby on the bed and took off her coat and shoes so she could sleep comfortably. Then he rolled the blanket into a snug bundle and tucked her inside it.
With only her face peeking out, Ivan gazed quietly down at Ruby. The face that was so gentle while she slept looked very worn out today, and it pained him.
“If you hadn’t been here, something terrible would have happened.”
Even Ivan had not expected that unseen things could have such a direct effect. He had only thought of the Serpent Tribe as a sly, underhanded lot, never imagining he would be struck at like this.
“So they dared to attack our tribe from a hundred years ago?”
Before he could even properly learn what his ancestors had gone through, he had been struck down helplessly. Sorcery left no evidence for those who could not see it, which put the Wolf tribe at a disadvantage.
He ground his teeth once more, then lowered his head and stole a kiss from her sleeping lips.
“Since you won’t do it for me, I’ll just have to take it myself.”
Remembering how Ruby would lick his lips whenever he gnashed his teeth, Ivan pressed his lips to hers again. What had begun as a light touch turned wet before he knew it, but Ivan could not stop.
No. He no longer knew any way to stop the feelings carrying him along.
After savoring Ruby’s lips for a long while, Ivan straightened up and blinked slowly.
“…I wish you wouldn’t go back.”
He thought he would be happy if she told him she would stay by his side even after her tribe was saved.
Like the moonlight that filtered faintly into the room, his eyes glowed softly.
The gaze, holding a hint of obstinacy, did not leave her face for a long time.
