“What?”
John’s expression had shifted surprise and bewilderment, and now plainly shifted into a dazed look. Jack watched and snickered.
Ruby asked John in earnest.
“Haven’t you wondered? Why Jack still wants to stay by your side.”
“…I have. I’d hoped he would go to a good place and live happily. That when he was reborn, he’d live healthy, with a family, wanting for nothing. But hearing that he’s still here pained my heart. And I worry about what will happen if he stays like that.”
“Then I’m telling you, hurry up and consummate things!”
“What?”
Just like before, John gave a start and looked baffled, as if he’d heard something he shouldn’t have.
Unable to bring herself to explain any further, Ruby put on a prim expression and said:
“Don’t ask any more, think it over yourself. Well then, I’m busy, so I’ll be off.”
“Ah, yes!”
The moment Ruby, who needed to hurry back to her room, lifted her stalled feet, the manor’s back door flew open.
“Ruby!”
“Ah!”
“I told you to rest in your roo… Damn it!”
Ivan, striding out in anger, spat a vexed curse at the chill that washed over him.
Ruby narrowed her eyes as she watched the spirits popping out from somewhere and clinging obsessively to Ivan.
After watching the spirits’ behavior for a moment, she dashed over and swatted away the ones clinging to Ivan’s side.
‘She’s shown up again?!’
‘Please, just go away!’
‘Kyaaa, that hurts!’
‘Because of you we can’t get any yang energy at all!’
‘Is he yours? Are you saying he’s yours?!’
From the lecherous ghosts arguing in shrill voices to the complaints of the ordinary spirits, Ruby grimaced. If I leave them alone now, they’ll think I’m a pushover.
“So, is he yours?”
‘…We staked our claim, so yes, he’s ours!’
‘Yes, yes. Everything she says is right.’
“If we’re following that logic, my claim on him runs far deeper, so he must be mine.”
At Ruby’s provocation, the ones who, just moments ago, had moved as freely as the living froze stiff like inanimate objects.
The sight of them rolling only their eyeballs round and round in that state was, frankly, a grotesque spectacle even to Ruby. It wasn’t as if only one or two spirits had swarmed in.
‘There’s no such thing! It’s our yang energy! It’s ours to feed on!’
One spirit, twisted into a bizarre position, shouted with only its mouth moving. Then the other spirits all together, necks cricked at strange angles, cried out, clacking their mouths.
‘It’s our share!’
‘Right! We have to feed on it!’
‘You have no right to stop us!’
Quietly watching the spirits’ antics, Ruby let out a snort of laughter and asked:
“Then who is it that has the right?”
Ivan quietly moved and pressed himself close behind Ruby. It was a chill he hadn’t felt in a while, and goosebumps rose all over him. He was no longer afraid of ghosts, but he still disliked them.
After all, there was no need to keep something he disliked close.
‘That would be Alfonso, obviously!’
‘Right, he gave us permission, so that male is ours!’
At the appearance of the unfamiliar name, Ruby’s eyes went cold for an instant.
“Who’s Alfonso?”
Alfonso? At the name that slipped from her mouth, Ivan’s brow furrowed.
“Alfonso, is it…”
“Do you know who he is?”
“He’s the Chief of the Serpent Tribe.”
“Hmm, I thought as much.”
Ruby decided to take the chance to ask what she’d been curious about. That was, after all, one of the reasons she’d left these spirits alone until now.
“Why are you all trying to take the Duke’s yang energy?”
Through Alex’s incident, she’d come to recall something so obvious she hadn’t thought of it.
Yang energy and yin energy. Males have yang energy, females have yin energy. They’re called yang and yin only because they’re divided up like that; in the end, both refer to the energy of the living.
