Chapter 5
It was my first time venturing outside alone. Until now, Human Servant No. 1 had always been by my side whenever we went for walks.
Thanks to him, I had never needed to worry about terrifying eagles. I could simply bask in the warm sunlight, breathe in the sweet fragrance of flowers, and flutter my wings to my heart’s content. Before I knew it, another perfectly happy day would have passed.
But things were different now.
As of today, I had left home. Until someone from the Wren Kingdom found me, I would have to survive this harsh world entirely on my own.
‘That stupid human!’
My simmering anger refused to subside. How could he possibly have thought of bringing me such an ugly bird?
Father and Mother had barely considered even the prince of the Sparrow Kingdom worthy of me.
Yet Schwein had gone and brought home some bird of completely unknown pedigree!
But that wasn’t the only reason I was angry.
From the moment I saw another bird nestled in his arms, everything about the situation had rubbed me the wrong way.
He was going to let another bird sit there besides me?
That was my place!
It felt as though the trust I had placed in him had been betrayed. I couldn’t quite explain why, but I was both furious and terribly hurt. Eventually, I found a small hollow in a tree and hid myself inside, where I finally let all my pent-up misery spill out.
—Chirp, chirp, chirp!
(Go ahead and live happily ever after with that stupid bird!)
After crying my heart out, I finally began to calm down. Now, however, I needed to look at my situation rationally.
‘How am I supposed to live from now on?’
At this point, I was no different from any other wren abandoned in the wild. I had no idea when or where I might encounter another predator like that eagle.
‘Maybe it would be safer to stay in my human form instead.’
As long as the humans didn’t discover that I was a beastwoman, what did it matter?
It might have been different if this were still my first day in the human world, but after living with Human Servant No. 1 for some time, I had already gained a decent understanding of how humans lived.
They weren’t all that different from us beastfolk. Their society had its own hierarchy, and everyone worked according to their position and assigned role. Eventually, those who found someone they loved would marry and have children together.
‘There’s really nothing to it.’
There was only one problem.
If I transformed into a human now, I would have to wander around completely naked.
As the thirty-second princess of the Wren Kingdom, I could never subject myself to such humiliation. First, I needed to find something suitable to wear.
Keeping a wary eye out for any predators that might be lurking nearby, I flew toward the area where the humans lived. After diligently flapping my little wings for a while, the city soon came into view.
Far below, crowds of humans bustled through the streets. Delicious aromas drifted toward me on the breeze, and as I sniffed the air, I involuntarily swallowed.
‘I’m hungry.’
The problem was that I hadn’t expected to run away from home, so I had barely eaten before leaving.
If I wanted to blend in with the humans, though, finding clothes had to come first. As I wondered where I could possibly get something to wear, I spotted a sparsely populated residential area.
The houses stood quite far apart from one another, and clothes hanging from a laundry line immediately caught my eye. Better yet, there didn’t seem to be anyone around.
I swooped lower and inspected the garments on the line.
They looked far too shabby for someone of my standing, but I needed clothes immediately, so there was little choice.
After landing on the ground, I transformed into my human form.
I had spent so long as a wren that suddenly having long human arms and legs again felt strangely unfamiliar.
“Uuugh.”
I stretched out my stiff body before turning my attention to the clothes on the line.
This one isn’t to my taste. The fabric on that one is dreadful. No, really. How can anyone have such hopelessly unfashionable taste?
To make matters worse, every garment showed signs of having been patched.
After rummaging through them for quite some time, I finally settled on the plainest cotton dress I could find.
Back in the Wren Kingdom, I wouldn’t have dreamed of wearing anything that wasn’t an extravagant gown dripping with jewels.
But this was a time to compromise with reality.
‘What matters isn’t the clothes themselves, but who is wearing them.’
Promising myself that I would someday compensate the owner of the dress, I set off toward the city.
It was quite a distance from here to the center of town. It hadn’t seemed far at all while I was flying, but traveling the same distance on foot took much longer than I expected.
Grrrrrrowl—
The more I walked, the hungrier I became.
When I had been flying overhead, I had smelled all sorts of delicious things coming from the city. I wanted nothing more than to stuff my mouth full of food as soon as possible.
Following the route I had committed to memory from the air, I eventually reached a bustling commercial district.
Humans hurried through the streets in every direction, all seemingly preoccupied with their own affairs. I slipped easily into the enormous crowd and began wandering wherever my feet happened to take me.
The human world was filled with all sorts of fascinating things.
I looked around eagerly as I walked, until suddenly, my steps came to an abrupt halt in front of one particular place.
