Chapter 23
The doctor, who had fitted a brace onto my wrist, stood up and looked back at Chase as if troubled.
“It’s quite swollen.”
“Is it broken again?”
“No. Fortunately, the bone was already mostly healed, so it isn’t broken, but it seems the impact startled the muscles. It will take some time to recover again.”
“What about the other areas?”
“She’s fine. Since she took a painkiller right away, the pain should subside quickly as well.”
The doctor looked at me and sent a silent glance, as if asking whether it was helping. The pain in my wrist had been so severe that I thought it might have been better to faint like last time, but now it had subsided to a level I could endure, so I quietly nodded. Unlike Chase, whose expression was tightly strained, the doctor gave a gentle smile.
“Your recovery has been fast so far, so you’ll likely improve quickly this time as well. Don’t worry too much. Stress is the worst thing for recovery.”
After adding a few precautions and a light scolding, he left the room. Since all the other servants had also been dismissed, I was left between Chase and the man wearing glasses.
In the eerily quiet silence, the man with glasses spoke, as if trying to shift the mood.
“Hello, Lady Nita. My greetings are late. I’m Anthony Edward.”
“Hello, Sir Anthony. I’m Nita Grace.”
A gentle gaze curved into a smile behind his glasses. It was a face I was seeing for the first time, yet a man I already knew.
Anthony Edward.
In the original work, he was the secretary who stayed right by Chase’s side. Though he didn’t have much talent in swordsmanship, he was exceptionally sharp and acted as Chase’s right-hand man.
“I’m glad you weren’t seriously hurt.”
I felt reassured for a moment at his faint smile, but then a sudden thought crossed my mind.
I recognize Anthony right away, but why don’t I remember seeing Logan in the original work?
On the first day, it had been Logan whom Chase had given orders to in a familiar tone. Their areas of work felt different, but if Anthony was the right hand, then Logan felt like the left. It had also been Logan who came to inform me to pack my belongings. If he was that important, he should have had a presence in the original work, yet I had no memory of him at all.
Narrowing my eyes, I seriously tried to recall Logan’s presence in the original work, when Chase spoke.
“You said you wanted to live, yet you threw yourself down the stairs?”
I didn’t throw myself. I just lost my footing. But there’s no way Chase would ask me that without knowing.
He was in a bad mood, so he must be mocking me.
Instead of making excuses, I had to apologize.
“…I’m sorry.”
As I lowered my head deeply, Chase clicked his tongue.
I had nothing to say.
Then again, who told him to walk toward me like the grim reaper? At that moment, I really thought this man was chasing me to kill me. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case, and he protected me instead.
So I had definitely been fine until we fell. But after Chase let out a sigh, he didn’t move. In that moment, everything went dark before my eyes.
I thought the world had ended. Because he had closed his eyes and didn’t move at all, I thought he had died.
To think I had killed the only man who could save me in this world, because of my mistake. It felt like all the blood in my body had run cold. If I had been a little less panicked, I would have noticed that his heart was beating just fine. But after suddenly falling down the stairs and seeing Chase lying there with his eyes closed and completely still, I couldn’t make a rational judgment.
So as I tried to get up, I put weight on my wrist, and it ended up like this.
“What about you? Are you alright?”
“You’re asking that now?”
I asked cautiously, but Chase spoke through clenched teeth, mocking me. When I said nothing, he answered again, as if doing me a favor.
“Do you think I’m you?”
He’s seriously prickly. But again, I had nothing to say. So I just pressed my lips tightly together.
Bang!
The door burst open and Logan rushed in, looking flustered.
“Your Grace! Mana activity!”
What? Could it be that the mana storm I had been waiting for was happening today?
Startled, I widened my eyes and quickly checked Chase’s expression. Even when he looked at me, his expression hadn’t been particularly gentle, but now it had turned incomparably sharper.
“Location?”
Despite the sharpness in his gaze, Chase stood up and asked in a calm voice.
“Near the Red Village on the western side of the territory. It’s an open area close to the village, so we need to move quickly.”
