Chapter 30
I was wrong. If I had locked the door, this man would have broken it down on the spot. I secretly clenched my fist inside my sleeve. Even so, it wasn’t threatening in the slightest, nor did it mean anything.
Then I noticed a pure white box in Chase’s hand.
“What is that?”
“It’s yours.”
Mine?
“What is it?”
“Well.”
I couldn’t hold it in and frowned deeply.
What is he trying to do? He brought it himself, and when I ask what it is, he says “well”? Whatever it is, it’s better than being told to leave the Grand Duke’s castle, but…
“Then give it to me.”
Because the way Chase was looking down at me was unusual, I quickly reached out to take the box and tried to close the door. But the moment I extended my arm, he lifted it up high enough that my hand couldn’t reach it.
“No.”
You bastard! Then why did you bring it? What am I supposed to do?
I glared sharply. Even a worm writhes when stepped on. Don’t forget that, you predator.
However, completely unconcerned with me, he closed the door and entered the room, then sat on the sofa by the window. After that, he tilted his head toward me.
It meant for me to sit.
But I didn’t move an inch and asked,
“You said you had something to say. What is it? What are you trying to say?”
“Whatever I say, it’s not like you have the right to refuse.”
“So…?”
“I’ll say it when I feel like it, so wait.”
“…”
As my expression soured, Chase leaned back against the armrest and leisurely crossed his legs.
Look at that arrogance. When I’m alone with this man, there’s an indescribable pressure. It feels like I could be crushed just by his gaze. And for some reason, today his atmosphere is no joke.
Did something make him angry? Did I do something wrong? As I thought about it, I frowned.
There is. Most recently, I did make him fall down the stairs. But that was an accident. At this point, it wasn’t even a matter of personality. He just doesn’t like me. Why?
Because I’m not Vivian? Is it because he’s the male lead, so he’s only drawn to the female lead or something like that?
Since Chase was silently staring straight at me, I avoided his gaze and rolled my eyes around, searching for a reason.
Or is it because I’m too weak after all? Because I don’t inspire trust? Even so, is that a reason to dislike someone this much? Why does he hate someone weak so much?
While I was lost in all sorts of thoughts and only watching his mood, the portrait of the Duchess I had seen in the study suddenly came to mind.
Even if I concede a hundred, a thousand times and say his mother was weak, I still don’t understand. Normally, even if your mother is frail, you still love her. Seeing how he kept the portrait of his deceased parent hanging in the center of his study for over ten years, it didn’t seem like they had a bad relationship. Or maybe that was just for show… Could it be that the Duchess had a terrible personality? So he doesn’t want to remember her?
My head was becoming a mess filled with all kinds of speculation. Then, subconsciously stepping back, I brushed against the doorknob. Of course, it was just a mistake.
“Trying to leave?”
However, seeing that, Chase’s voice dropped low, and his gaze turned fierce.
“Go ahead. If you can handle what comes after.”
Then he let out a short laugh. For a moment, I found myself staring blankly at him. Come to think of it, this was the first time I had seen him smile like that.
The problem was that it meant he was mocking me. But seriously, he’s ridiculously handsome. A man with a violent personality but a perfect appearance that fits my ideal type. Looks like I need to change my ideal type. Not that I know if I can.
“I’m not going.”
Answering with a fair bit of courage, I walked toward the box. Even so, it was just in front of the sofa where Chase was sitting, but if this kept up, it felt like he wouldn’t stop staring at me. I needed something else to divert his attention.
“What is this? I’m really curious.”
“Cake.”
“Cake?”
Inside the Grand Duke’s castle, I had been well provided for without lacking anything, but this was my first time seeing a cake. So I asked with a slightly excited voice, smiling.
