Chapter 65
Chase lightly grabbed Nita’s hair. The fine strands slipped softly between his long fingers.
“How curious are you, exactly?”
He could feel Nita’s flustered breathing grow uneven.
“It seems like there’s some misunderstanding. What I’m curious about is… What I’m curious about is…”
“…not the method of imprinting…”
Nita trailed off before finishing her sentence and turned her head. As she had been backing away to put distance between them, her body flinched and then edged slightly closer to him again. It seemed the glass window behind her was bothering her.
This was the training grounds, and the windows here were made to withstand far stronger impacts than ordinary glass. Even if Nita, light and lacking strength, were to lean her entire body against it, it wouldn’t break or shatter. It’s that sturdy.
But Chase had no intention of telling her that and simply watched her in silence.
Grabbing her waist or her leg to steady her would have been nothing, but he rather liked the way she looked uneasy. The desperate look in her eyes, as if she might reach out and cling to him at any moment, too.
“Chase, please step back a little. I think I might fall.”
“I don’t want to.”
When her request didn’t work, Nita’s round eyes widened in surprise, then soon narrowed as if she couldn’t understand.
“Why?”
Well. Why indeed.
Without answering, Chase tightly held Nita’s waist and extended his other arm to tap the window.
Click-
The firmly shut window opened at once, and the cold winter wind rushed in. Nita, who had glanced behind her, saw the open window and looked back at him in confusion.
Her expression clearly asked what on earth he was doing.
With a faint smile, Chase released the hand that had been holding her waist. Then he gave her shoulder a light shove.
“Ah!”
Losing her balance, Nita let out a small cry and instinctively grabbed onto his shoulder.
A correct choice. Even if it’s the first floor, clinging to me is better than falling outside.
He let out a silent chuckle.
Seeing Chase smiling in satisfaction, Nita, looking displeased, pushed against his shoulder with force.
Of course, he didn’t budge.
It seemed like she tried, but he felt no strength at all. Well, even if, conceding a hundred times, she had managed to push him back, he had no intention of stepping aside.
The window frame is at a safe height where she could jump down without issue, but with him blocking the inside of the training grounds, she couldn’t step down, and it wasn’t as if she could jump outside the building either.
Stuck in between, unable to do this or that, Nita spoke firmly.
“Move.”
“I told you I don’t want to.”
Spitting out the habitual words indifferently with a blank expression, Chase carefully examined Nita’s appearance.
Under the moonlight pouring through the window, her smooth hair shimmered faintly as it swayed in the breeze.
Clear white skin. Long eyelashes. Large eyes glistening with moisture. Small red lips. Cheeks with just the right amount of fullness. A slender neck that looked like it could be grasped with one hand.
She had changed to the point that he could hardly recall what she looked like when they first met, even when he tried. She had filled out compared to before, making her look better. Of course, she’s still thin, but he could now somewhat agree that she had become healthier.
Pretty.
At that thought that suddenly crossed his mind, Chase swallowed a hollow laugh.
Her face hadn’t left his mind all day. No. His entire day had been Nita.
Even when he heard first thing in the morning that the nutritional drinks had arrived. When he told Anthony to find some candy to get her to take them. When he cut meat for her. When he was checking documents in the capital. When he came across a candy shop and a flower shop.
Looking back, she had lingered before his eyes all day.
Was that why? Because you’re pretty, I must have done something that foolish for you.
Putting it that way made him feel much more at ease. It felt like he could somewhat understand the version of himself he hadn’t been able to accept just moments ago. The ridiculous version of himself he hadn’t even been aware of until he entered the mansion.
The moment he stepped into the mansion and saw the mirror hanging in the lobby, though it had been brief, he had been genuinely flustered.
Because in the mirror stood some pathetic bastard. A pathetic bastard holding a large jar of candy neatly wrapped with a ribbon, along with an even larger, more extravagant bouquet of flowers.
Among the young nobles in the capital, there were many such fools. Idiots who tried their best to win over women somehow. They dressed in flashy clothes and bought flowers or jewels, offering their money and time to young ladies. It was a sight Chase, who had never once been interested in the opposite s*x, couldn’t understand.
Yet today, his own appearance was no different from those very men he had thought were doing pointless things.
