Chapter 159
“Lynette.”
Spotting her, Euphen strode toward her.
Instead of asking whether she had overheard their earlier conversation, he let out a low sigh.
Lynette quietly looked at him.
If he would just tell her it was nothing, she would believe him.
But Euphen offered no excuse whatsoever.
As her lips trembled faintly, she finally managed to speak.
“What are you trying to do?”
Eshar approached, shrugging as if she had expected this, then spoke to him.
“I told you she would find out sooner or later.”
“I don’t want to drag Lynette into this.”
“If we’re going to keep traveling together, it’s better to tell her everything.”
“…”
“You can’t keep it a secret forever.”
He let out another sigh and roughly brushed his hand down his face.
Lynette glanced between the two of them.
She couldn’t guess what they were talking about.
All she understood was that the two of them were planning something, and that they would continue to do so.
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
Euphen cut her off with a scowl, but Eshar didn’t back down.
“You’re worried Lynette might get involved in this, right?”
“Eshar, if I remember correctly, it was just yesterday you said Sillian was suspicious.”
“He doesn’t seem to be a threat, so I’ve decided to trust him. Though I will still check.”
“What is this about?”
Lynette couldn’t hold back and stepped in.
Even the few words she had heard carried significant weight. If something serious was happening, she wanted to know.
And Euphen is involved.
Eshar looked at the man as if asking for permission.
His face remained rigid, but eventually he shut his eyes tightly, then opened them. Only then did Eshar speak lightly.
“If we’re lucky, we might even get Sillian’s help.”
“I don’t want that man’s help.”
“Lynette and Sillian both need to know what’s going on. Otherwise, they won’t be able to act if something happens.”
The moment Euphen pressed his lips together, Sillian appeared as if he had been waiting for the right time.
“You were here.”
He measured the distance between Lynette and the Imperial Prince, then slightly frowned.
Lynette stepped back just a little.
With all four gathered in one place, silence fell once more.
‘Will there ever come a day when they get along?’
She tried to imagine them smiling and talking together, but she simply couldn’t picture it.
It would likely stay like this until the moment they eventually parted.
She clasped her hands tightly together.
“Like Eshar said, if we’re going to keep traveling together, I think it’s best if you tell us what’s going on.”
Hearing Lynette’s words, Sillian glanced sharply at Euphen and Eshar.
As if trying to guess what had happened, his eyes narrowed slightly.
The man who had seemed determined not to speak finally sighed, then began slowly.
“You may have already noticed, but Eshar and I intentionally chose this place.”
At his words, Lynette subconsciously nodded.
‘Right. They moved as if they knew exactly where they were headed.’
If they were only focused on escaping the Imperial Family’s sphere of influence, they would have hesitated at least once over which direction to take. But the two of them had shown no hesitation at any crossroads. As if they already had a destination.
She should have wondered about that at least once, but because she had been so absorbed in running, she never thought deeply about it.
So this place had been their destination.
Lynette quietly waited for Euphen’s next words.
“Eshar and I have one goal. Winning.”
“More precisely, claiming the throne.”
Standing beside him, Eshar added briefly.
Euphen let out a bitter laugh.
“When we faked our deaths and left, we had certain objectives.”
Not knowing where to begin, Euphen hesitated for a moment, then shrugged.
“To put it simply, we’re gathering evidence that will cause the nobles supporting other members of the Imperial Family to fall from power. And if we’re lucky, secrets that belong to our enemies as well.”
“We can’t investigate every noble, so through the Lera Merchant Guild, we’ll only look into those rumored to have ‘dirty’ dealings. Even after narrowing it down, there are still quite a lot.”
Sillian, who had been listening with his arms crossed, wore a displeased expression.
He looked like he had a lot of things to say, but he clenched his teeth and held his words back.
Lynette could easily guess what he wanted to say.
That their work is too dangerous, and that it would be better to part ways here.
But he also knew Lynette wouldn’t simply agree to leave them because of that, so he was forcing himself to remain silent.
“There’s also the matter of uncovering the internal traitor.”
Euphen added bitterly.
“It won’t take an excessively long time, but it won’t be short either.”
“Well, if the situation suddenly changes, you’ll have to ‘return from the dead’ right away.”
Eshar said with a light laugh.
“I don’t care what you two plan to do, but I hope it doesn’t affect Lynette and me.”
Sillian stated firmly.
Euphen frowned as he replied.
“I have no intention of putting Lynette in danger.”
“Make sure you keep that promise.”
“We’re not asking you to do anything. But both of you need to at least know the general idea of what we’re doing and what’s happening where we’re staying. Otherwise, it won’t be safe for either of you.”
Eshar stepped in between them as though trying to mediate.
