Some people approached him, but he radiated such an unapproachable aura that no one lingered long. He was in a foul mood—Felice had been avoiding him lately, and now she wouldn’t even talk to him after treating him like some kind of pervert.

“So Baron Conn’s been busy lately, huh?”

“Yeah. Some penniless fallen noble’s daughter—guess pride means nothing when money’s involved.”

“Eh? Baron Conn? It’s not about money.”

Just as Claude set his empty wine glass down, the conversation caught his ear.

“Not about money? Come on.”

“Well, it started off badly—she slapped him, after all. But apparently, Baron Conn really fell for her.”

“…Fell for her?”

One of the men paused, grimacing.

“Didn’t he lose his wife? But the tutor didn’t want to become his official wife.”

“Yeah, yeah. But how did he win her over? If not for money, then how? Everyone knows she slapped him in front of a crowd!”

Claude signaled for another glass of wine from a passing servant.

He was genuinely curious. If it wasn’t money, how had that woman changed her mind after slapping him? It was strangely similar to his own situation—he’d just gotten hit in the face with a bag.

“I heard it was a sincere apology or something…”

“What the heck does that mean?”

Losing interest, the man across tossed down his cards.

“Might as well say he grew horns. A sincere apology moved her heart? Please.”

“No, really. And there’s one more thing. You really don’t know anything, do you?”

“One more thing? Now I’m interested. What is it?”

The men set their cards aside as Claude discreetly angled himself to listen in.

“To be honest, Conn has money, he’s got a decent body, but…”

The man gestured upward.

“…no hair. The Conn men have all been bald for generations. That’s a real handicap.”

“But they still all got married and had kids.”

“Yeah, well, I mean, those marriages weren’t for love. It was about money.”

“No, you clearly haven’t heard. The Conn wives are all major players in society.”

“So what’s the real reason?”

Now the man’s voice dropped.

“It’s because…well, they say he’s, uh… really well-endowed.”

Claude’s hand, holding the wine glass, froze.

“Well-endowed?”

“Yeah. The Conn wives all supposedly have this glow about them, and the rest of the ladies are green with envy. Plus, they’re loaded.”

“Really?”

“You really didn’t know? It’s famous.”

“So, the tutor changed her mind because of that?”

“Well… That’s just what we say. But he did apologize, sincerely. No money, no gifts, not even flowers. Just a heartfelt apology somewhere pretty. I guess sometimes it’s not money that makes someone’s heart waver.”

Hmph…

Claude frowned. Had he really done something to Felice that required an apology? Still, that last part hit home—sometimes, it wasn’t money that moved people.

“But how could she know about…that, unless the apology worked and they really got together?”

“It was raining that day, apparently. Baron Conn got completely soaked.”

The man started coughing on his cigarette smoke.

“What?”

“Just saying.”

The others snickered and exhaled smoke.

‘Is size down there…really that important?’

Claude glanced down at himself. Just how big was it to be considered ‘well-endowed’.

Then suddenly he remembered the erotica Felice had.

“It’s certainly bigger than the book Felice was reading…”

He mumbled. The men at the next table glanced over, but Claude’s cold stare quickly made them look away.
