“[Amelia, I think we should get out of here, fast.]” Slinky must have sensed the same impending doom, coiling its body tightly. I nodded, about to move, but the woman in front of Luke was faster. She’d clearly heard something from Luke because she suddenly whipped her head around to stare directly at me. I couldn’t avoid her gaze.

“W-what’s going on?”

“[It can’t be good.]” I murmured to Slinky without moving my lips.

The woman looked furious. Luke, on the other hand, was watching me with a sly grin.

“Oh no, this is bad.”

The woman in front of Luke, clutching her skirt in both hands, marched toward me. Her approach was so aggressive that I missed my chance to escape.

“[I told you we should go!]”

“You’re the one who was curious, Slinky.”

Slinky hid itself completely, avoiding the woman’s notice.

The woman stopped right in front of me. Her lips were pressed together in a tight line, and she glared at me.

“What’s… what’s this about?”

“Are you Luke’s fiancée?”

“What?”

Whose fiancée? I blinked, stunned by her words. They were so absurd that I couldn’t even process a response. But the way her hands trembled around her skirt told me she genuinely believed I was Luke’s fiancée.

‘The source of all this is…’

Probably Luke. His sudden good mood… He was up to his unpleasant tricks again.

“I think you’ve got the wrong idea.”

“Do you know a man named Luke Randy?”

“I know him, but we’re just childhood friends.” Childhood friends who were bound together against my will.

“Just childhood friends?”

I nodded earnestly, hoping to convey my innocence. The woman frowned, seemingly unconvinced that I was lying. She looked bewildered.

“But Luke said you…”

“That’s…”

“Stop. There’s no need to lie anymore. I’ve made up my mind.”

Luke interrupted, approaching us. He put on a ridiculously sweet voice, directed at me.

“Sylvia, I apologize. I met you at my grandfather’s insistence…” He paused, looking at me.

‘Is he insane? This is disgusting!’ The way he gazed at me, as if I were precious to him, made me cringe.

“But I don’t want to lie anymore. Because of the disapproval and scrutiny of others, we’ve been keeping our relationship a secret.”

“B-but…” Sylvia stammered, looking disbelievingly between us.

Ignoring her reaction, Luke sidled up to me and took my hand.

“Luke, you can’t just lie like this. Sylvia? Luke and I really have no relationship whatsoever.”

I tried to pull my hand away, making no effort to hide my actions from Sylvia. But his grip was too tight. My hand started to go numb.

“You don’t have to lie for me.” He ignored my struggles, even raising my hand to his lips.

“Eww! What are you doing, you creep!” I yelled, genuinely disgusted.

“…I don’t want to hide our relationship anymore. You don’t have to pretend to hate me for my sake, Lia.”

‘Lia?’ Who was Lia? The seemingly affectionate nickname sent shivers down my spine.

Unfazed by my horrified expression, Luke continued his performance for Sylvia’s benefit.

“We really have no relationship…” I tried my best to convey the truth to her, but her tear-filled eyes already held distrust.

Sylvia clenched her fists, her lips pressed into a thin line as she glared at us. Then, her hand shot out.

Slap!

Luke’s head snapped to the side, a bright red mark blooming on his cheek.

“I’ll be telling Chairman Rupert everything about this.”

“I’m sorry, Sylvia.”

“And I won’t forget the humiliation you’ve put me through, Luke!” Sylvia delivered her final words, then glared at me. I tensed, wondering if she was going to slap me too. Just then, Luke stepped in front of me, as if shielding me from Sylvia.

‘He’s completely lost it!’

His action only intensified Sylvia’s glare.

“Luke, I liked you. But I can’t wish you happiness with someone else!”

She turned and stormed away.

The moment Sylvia was gone, I let out a sigh and addressed Luke, tugging at my captive hand. “Will you let go of my hand now? It’s disgusting.”

“Disgusting? You think I enjoyed that?”

“You’re the one who grabbed it, Luke Randy.”

Now that Sylvia was gone, Luke quickly released my hand. He loosened his tie as if finally able to breathe, and ran a hand through his neatly styled hair.

Seeing his nonchalant attitude, I felt a surge of anger. I gritted my teeth and kicked him in the shin.

Thwack! Luke doubled over.

“Ow! Amelia Hazel, are you crazy?!”

“That’s my line! What was that all about?” It was unacceptable, not just to me, but to Sylvia as well.

“Tch, don’t worry about the blind date. I already told her I wasn’t interested. But Sylvia kept…”

“I don’t care about your problems! Why drag me into this?!”

“You shouldn’t have caught my eye in the first place.” He rubbed his shin, a smirk playing on his lips. He was infuriating.

Thwack!

As he straightened up, I kicked him in the shin again.
