“Fxck!”

The moment Evelyn read that line, a harsh curse escaped her lips.

“I killed him? That fxcking prince?”

If the prince really was dead, the murderer would be the Duke of Brumfield, not her. The velvet box the Duke had sent her contained Prince Adrian’s eyeball!

“I didn’t fxcking leave Brumfield! How the hell could I have killed him? It must have been the Duke!”

Evelyn screamed in frustration, but no one took her words seriously.

Soon, the ominous sound of heavy footsteps echoed from within the gates. Several soldiers, armed to the teeth, were approaching.

Quick as a flash, Evelyn drew her dagger and struck the guard’s arm. The sharp blade cut through the gap in his gauntlet, slicing into his wrist.

“AAAH!”

The guard screamed in agony, unable to bear the intense pain, and shoved Evelyn away. Maintaining her balance, Evelyn leapt onto her horse with the swiftness of a predator.

She couldn’t afford to get caught again like this. If it was regicide, a punishment far worse than ordinary murder awaited her. Something like… execution, for instance…

‘How the hell do I survive all this?!’

She had no intention of dying because of a false accusation. Kicking the horse’s flank hard with her heel, Evelyn raced forward, not looking back. She didn’t know exactly how things had escalated in just one day, but there was one thing she knew for certain.

She had to escape from here.

That was her only goal as she urged the horse on. Well, even if it wasn’t Lovent, she could find some secluded forest or a small, remote village deep in the mountains, a place where rumors didn’t reach.

The horse… she’d have to eat it as horse meat, unfortunately.

“Catch her! It’s Evelia Locke!”

Before she knew it, the guards on horseback began chasing her. Grinding her teeth, Evelyn pushed the horse even harder. The horse, having been running for so long, was starting to slow down, but since it was one of the fine steeds from the House of Brumfield, the guards couldn’t catch up.

In broad daylight, fog began to roll in across the fields. Though she shuddered at the annoying fog, Evelyn didn’t stop the horse.

And then, it happened.

The horse wobbled with a strange sound and soon collapsed onto the ground.

“Ugh!”

Evelyn, having fallen from the horse, instinctively tried to roll her body to avoid injury. She tumbled across the dirt, letting out an exhale as she raised her head.

An arrow was lodged in the horse’s rear. The horse, collapsed on the ground, had its neck twisted and foam spilling from its mouth as it died.

“Shxt… this is really bad.”

The words that had been bubbling inside her finally escaped her lips. Evelyn squeezed her eyes shut, then opened them to the growing sound of hooves, shouting voices, the tremor of the earth beneath her, and the fog creeping in around her.

She had to think fast.

There had to be a way to get out of this situation. She clenched the dirt beneath her hands. She wasn’t about to quietly die here.

She quickly scanned her surroundings, but all she could see were vast fields. No crumbling cottages or shelter in sight.

‘No place to hide.’

Should she try to escape once captured? The prison in Lovent wasn’t too difficult to break out of if you paid off the right people… The guards would open a back door for the right price…

Click, clink.

The sound of armed soldiers dismounting from their horses grew closer. Sharp longswords were thrust in her direction from all sides.

“Evelia Locke. You are under arrest for the regicide of the royal family.”

The voice of the captain, trying to sound serious, echoed from above. With her arms bound, Evelyn was forcibly pulled up and shrugged her arms in frustration.

“Let go! Didn’t you hear what I said? Damn it!”

The soldier who had a firm grip on her arms only sneered, not budging an inch. Trapped between two towering figures, Evelyn gritted her teeth in silent anger. Then, suddenly, she heard a mutter from behind.

“See? You should have stayed quiet.”

Evelyn turned her head with fury, but froze in place when she saw the face of the soldier who spoke.

Quiet… where?

Why did she feel such an overwhelming sense of danger? As soon as she confirmed the soldier’s face, a wave of exhaustion washed over her.

The soldier… had no face.

No, there was a face beneath the hood, but it was devoid of eyes, nose, or mouth. How was this happening? It didn’t matter.

The face of the man who had once called her “Eve” in a fit of ecstasy appeared in her mind, causing her breath to catch in her throat.

Everything felt like a nightmare, and in the strange, unreal situation, Evelyn no longer had the strength to resist.
