Evelyn’s heart pounded rapidly, and her vision swam. She could feel heat rising from deep within her body, though it wasn’t just from the wine she hadn’t touched in a long while.

The tongue brushing against the sensitive inner flesh made her squirm. Or perhaps, what tingled most was the slick, aching space between her thighs.

“Hmph, fxck off. You monster!”

Evelyn finally regained her senses and shoved the duke’s arm away. She roughly wiped her lips, slick with saliva she couldn’t even tell was hers, against the back of her hand and clenched her teeth.

Unlike her, the duke merely curled his blood-red lips into a languid smile.

“I’ll say it again: it makes no difference.”

Evelyn glared at him without a word. The man, unfazed by the hostility blazing in her eyes, spoke with maddening composure.

“You’re my wife. And we will go on.”

A thin line of blood trickled from the corner of his twisted lips. The tip of his tongue, stained crimson, casually wet his perfectly shaped mouth. With his blue eyes gleaming, the duke leaned in closer to Evelyn.

Their noses nearly touched. His breath brushed her skin. The stench of blood hit her all at once. Grinning brightly like a man content in death, he stared straight into her and added each word, slow and deliberate.

“We’ll be together.”

His long legs collapsed beneath him. The duke wore a completely unbothered smile, not the least bit troubled or in pain. And finally…

Calix Brumfield met his death.

For the third time.

The poison had taken effect faster than before, likely thanks to the dosage. She’d mixed far more into the wine bottle than she had into the teacup the first time. Every last drop of lethal toxin she had was poured into that drink. She had known there would be no next chance.

And so, there was no time to savor relief. She had no way of knowing how long this opportunity would last.

Evelyn immediately dashed into the inner chamber. She had to retrieve the knife and sack she’d hidden earlier while the meal was being prepared.

If Prince Adrian’s poison still remained, then so did the rest of the tools. Instead of the dagger she usually used, Evelyn gripped the hilt of a larger blade with both hands.

Outside, the sun had fully set, and the sky beyond the window now pitch dark. After taking a deep breath, Evelyn dragged the man’s unmoving body across the floor.

Just one final step remained.

To make sure his body could never be restored again, she had to cut it to pieces and scatter them far, far apart.

But for some reason, Evelyn’s mind was filled with anxiety.

‘It makes no difference.’

The voice of the dead man echoed in her ears like a ghostly hallucination.

“Eve.”

The owner of the familiar hand she had severed slowly took in Evelyn’s body, eyes roving over her with languid interest.

As if it were just another night, his gaze, hungry and possessive, lingered on her. The man chuckled throatily at how much he looked forward to this time every night.

Her cheek, lips, neck, collarbone, shoulder, the scars, her chest and waist, her hands and fingers, all the way to their tips — his hands, gentle as if offering praise for a job well done, caressed her. It was like he was enjoying a lovemaking’s afterglow.

“You’re a mess. Don’t you want to wash up?”

Even though the dried blood on her fingers was his, the man seemed utterly unconcerned.

A sticky tongue slid down the line of her neck. At the scar over her left b****t, his lips pressed down, sucking hard and scraping with his teeth like he was carving a new wound.

Despite his caresses, Evelyn felt nothing. Heard nothing. Saw nothing.

Just like before.

Crackle, crackle.

The sound of dry firewood burning echoed in her head.

Though wildly out of place for midsummer, the fireplace roared behind them. Evelyn shivered.

“Hmm, are you cold?”

Calix murmured softly and pulled her into a tight embrace. Like a devoted lover, he placed a gentle kiss on her cheek. The body that had once been severed now clung to her. It was flawless, as though the wounds had never existed.

As Evelyn closed her eyes to deny the reality before her, a soothing voice spoke.

“See? I told you. It makes no difference.”
