Chapter 64
Warm breath brushed against her ear as his lips lightly caught her earlobe. The touch was revolting. Evelyn said nothing.
‘Look forward to your gift.’
So that was what the words, spoken through Laura’s lips, had meant.
Meanwhile, taking her silence exactly as he pleased, the man let out a soft chuckle and whispered with chilling amusement,
“If you don’t like it, you could deal with it yourself. That’s what you’re best at, isn’t it, Eve?”
Evelyn whirled around and shoved both of Calix’s shoulders with all her strength. The Duke yielded without resistance, taking a casual step back before another picture-perfect smile spread across his face.
“What exactly are you trying to do? What, are we playing house now?”
“My wife looked bored, so I got her a present.”
His answer came lightly. His blue eyes curved like a crescent moon.
“Isn’t it a Duchess’s duty to bear and raise the next heir?”
“Fxck off.”
One of Calix’s brows lifted. Pressing a finger gently against her lips, he spoke in a voice as sweet as honey.
“You’ll have to watch your language from now on, Eve. Our daughter might hear you.”
“Our daughter, my *ss…”
“What should we name her?”
Calix mused aloud.
“Since she’s the spitting image of you, maybe we should borrow something from your name. Ah, perhaps we could give her your mother’s name as her middle name? Though Rowena does sound a little old-fashioned.”
“Shut. The fxck. Up!”
Grinding her teeth, Evelyn drove a vicious kick into Calix’s shin. The force was enough to shatter bone, but the Duke did not so much as flinch. He merely glanced down at his leg, as if nothing more than a gentle breeze had brushed past it.
Then he spoke, utterly unfazed.
“Eve, just as you became a gift to me, I simply wanted to give you one in return. When I received you, I was truly happy. I hope you’ll be happy too.”
Stepping closer, Calix gently tucked her disheveled golden hair behind her ear. A deep smile curved his lips as he added,
“Of course, if you don’t want her, you’re free to get rid of her.”
I rather like it when it’s just the two of us.

As though she had already forgotten Evelyn’s open hostility, Laura remained glued to the baby’s side, chatting away with irrepressible excitement.
“My lady, I can’t believe how beautiful the little miss is. She’s more beautiful than any baby I’ve ever seen.”
Evelyn said nothing. She simply stared out the window.
Dusk was settling over the estate, and the garden, veiled beneath a blanket of mist, looked almost dreamlike.
If she went out there and started tearing the place apart, what would that man think?
Would he think she’d finally gone mad? Of course not. No matter what she did, he would only watch from afar, detached and amused, before giving the leash a single tug when he decided she’d gone far enough.
Even so… Right now she wanted to scream until her throat bled, rake her fingers through her neatly arranged hair, and rip the elegant dress from her body.
Because, fxck. She wished this were all a dream. She had never given birth.
Yet somehow she had become a mother overnight, and she simply could not accept it.
But she couldn’t. Because—
“Oh my! Are you happy? My goodness, that smile is exactly like yours, my lady!”
It was all real, and it was a reality that would never change. So she chose not to react.
“I suppose.”
Evelyn answered flatly, her voice devoid of any emotion. It was only natural for the child to resemble her. The thing had been made in her image.
Unaffected by her mistress’s indifferent response, Laura continued cooing in delight.
“Oh, look at that! You’re happy, aren’t you? You just keep smiling. Oh, my… wherever did such an angelic little miss come from?”
“His lordship must’ve given birth to her himself.”
“Oh, my lady, really!”
“It’s not exactly wrong, is it?”
“What are you saying?” Laura giggled. “The Master is certainly extraordinary, but even that would be impossible.”
Taking Evelyn’s remark as nothing more than a joke, Laura smiled with affectionate exasperation. Even when she spoke the truth, it was dismissed without question.
Faced with this absurd reality, Evelyn lost any desire to continue the conversation and returned her gaze to the garden below.
