“……Yes, Madam.”

Lily took out a small glass bottle of a familiar shape from a wooden box. The act of handing it to Sarah didn’t seem awkward at all.

The luxurious dress, visible through her shabby robe, reminded her so much of Leila. No matter how much she tried to tarnish and bring her down, Leila still exuded elegance.

Leila’s current appearance brought back memories of the girl’s mother, who used to look down on Sarah with disdain. Born into nobility, enjoying power without any effort, shouldn’t such people be magnanimous towards those like Sarah?

Everyone should know that the root of all these relationships started not with Sarah but with Leila’s mother.

“This is the venom of the velvet shadow spider that you were so desperately looking for. Aren’t you curious if I really used this to kill your mother or if it was this that caused your blindness?”

Leila felt a chilling realization that Sarah genuinely intended to kill her. Even without sight, people express their emotions in various ways. The malice and hatred in Sarah’s voice couldn’t be masked, no matter how calmly she tried to speak.

Leila pressed her hands against the floor to stand up. Though she stumbled, she managed to steady herself against the wall and stood tall.

Pulling down the hood of her robe, she tried to focus on the light shape that she assumed was Sarah. Though she could only guess the direction, Sarah and Lily were visibly shocked by Leila’s actions. It seemed as though she was truly seeing them.

“If I’m curious, will you tell me?”

“You should know how to show respect to your elders. Such terrible manners.”

“It’s hard to tell which mother you’re talking about. Could you use the proper title?”

“After all I’ve done to raise you… Even though you weren’t my real child, I still raised you well. Didn’t I, Lily?”

Lily was startled, feeling as though Leila could see her. Memories of young Leila, with an innocent face, watching the maid put poison in her mother’s food, flashed in her mind.

It was as if she saw the same look in Leila’s eyes now, making Lily check repeatedly if Leila could actually see.

“So, you wanted to be a noble so badly, and now you’ve learned how to speak like one.”

Leila’s sharp retort left Sarah unable to even muster a fake smile. It hit her hardest spot.

The struggle to become a noble had been immense. She had to learn the noble lineage, etiquette, and culture to not be looked down upon and to avoid being abandoned by her husband.

But what did this girl, who had everything from birth, know about any of it?

“I’m curious. If I make you drink the whole bottle of the venom, will you die instantly, or will you suffer from a high fever and become brain-dead? Aren’t you curious?”

With a wide, sinister grin, Sarah signaled to two mercenaries who had been waiting nearby. Leila had no idea they were there. It was a simple plan: swiftly capture her and force the venom down her throat to shut her up forever.

The mercenaries approached silently, but Leila had already noticed their presence earlier from the light shapes she saw. Even if she died, she planned to leave something behind.

Yes, this was a good thing. It was fitting to end this way. She had lived too comfortably in the Bavenberg household, beyond her means. She could not continue living with someone as great as Lucas.

As she let go of the thread of her life completely, she felt an overwhelming sense of peace. Leila stared at the shape she assumed to be Sarah with a serene gaze, as calm as a still sea.

“Get her!”

The two mercenaries lunged at Leila with a shout, but she moved first as she heard them getting close. She ran towards Sarah with all her might, not caring if she got hurt.

“Madam!”

Lily screamed, but Sarah hadn’t expected Leila to come at her and reacted too slowly. She even tripped over her own dress and fell backward.

Leila tackled her and quickly grabbed Sarah’s wrist. She fumbled upward, grabbed the glass bottle of velvet shadow spider venom from Sarah’s hand, and snatched it.

“Wh-What is this?”
