Chapter 88
Her breezy reply made his eyes narrow. He’d clearly expected her to bristle at the vulgarity—maybe even lunge at him in protest. But just as Valen could predict her reactions, Roseline had long since learned to read him, especially when it came to his… appetites.
“You said a kiss. You didn’t specify how,” she pointed out, licking the inside of her cheek under his unamused stare. Take that. “I’ll keep it in mind for next time.”
“‘Next time’?”
He repeated the words slowly, then nodded as if something had just clicked. To her surprise, he stood up without another word. Roseline stared at his retreating back, bewildered. She’d expected him to demand a redo—or at least withhold the clothes until she complied properly.
Only when he reached the tent’s entrance did she finally duck under the blankets again. Valen glanced back at the suspicious lump on the bed, then lifted the flap. Outside, Merrick stood waiting, head bowed. The moment Valen stepped out, he let the fabric fall shut behind him, blocking any glimpse inside.
“You’re back, Your Highness.”
Merrick held a large trunk—supplies procured from Molin, the nearest territory. Valen acknowledged his efforts with a noncommittal grunt and extended a hand. The attendant, wisely avoiding any unnecessary offers to enter, silently handed over the trunk.
“How’s Molin?” Valen asked.
Valen tapped his tongue against the roof of his mouth with a rhythmic click, click, click—each sound sharper than the last as his frown deepened.
“Not well,” Merrick admitted. “Most refugees have fled to Molin. The city is overflowing, inside and out. Their garrison is stretched too thin—civil order is collapsing.”
“And the infected?”
“The count claims there have been no sightings near the territory. But with their forces scrambling to maintain internal security, we can’t confirm whether their perimeter patrols are even operational.”
Molin sat on the route to the capital—a logical place to rest for the night, but if its defenses were crumbling, there was no point forcing entry.
“Prepare to camp outside the walls,” Valen decided.
“At once, Your Highness.”
When Valen reentered the tent, he dropped the trunk onto the table with a thud. The noise made Roseline peek out from her blanket cocoon—hair disheveled, cheeks flushed, the collar of his shirt slipping off one shoulder. Valen’s gaze lingered on the exposed curve of her collarbone before he strolled to the bed.
“Come here.”
He sat exactly where he’d been before leaving and crooked a finger at her. Roseline stared.
“N-now?”
“You did promise to do better next time.”
“I didn’t think ‘next time’ would be five minutes later!”
“Then shall I take the lead?”
His tone left no room for argument. Roseline hesitated, then crawled toward him on her knees.
“Won’t you at least close your eyes?” she tried.
“I don’t fall for the same trick twice.”
“I mean it this time—”
“Or would you prefer I demonstrate?”
With a tiny, resigned noise, Roseline pressed her lips to his. Valen observed everything—the tremble of her lashes, the way she clenched her fists like a martyr marching to execution. When her tongue flicked tentatively at his lower lip, he chuckled but didn’t yield.
As he leaned back slightly, Roseline unconsciously followed, her balance tipping forward—until Valen suddenly flipped their positions, pinning her beneath him.
“You promised no hands!” she yelped.
“Ah. My mistake.”
“That wasn’t a mistake!”
“Would you prefer I pretend it was?” His grin was wolfish.
“That’s—! That’s not how logic works—”
Roseline’s outrage dissolved into a gasp as Valen freed his already-hard c**k. The flushed head glistened, a bead of precum welling at the tip.
“Then what do you propose we do about this?”
Her pupils shook.
“How do you expect me to ride a horse with my c**k this hard, Roseline?”
“Why are you asking me that…?”
“You’re the one who got me like this.”
“……”
“You’re the one who wandered around in nothing but my shirt. You’re the one who teased me, licking your lips like that.”
“Everything I did was because you told me to—hnng!”
“True enough.”
Seizing the moment while Roseline was flustered, he gripped his swollen c**k and began rubbing slow circles over her c**t.
“I won’t use my hands anymore.”
“……”
“If you don’t get wet, I won’t put it in.”
Holding her uneasy gaze, he whispered the words with deceptive tenderness.
