Chapter 50
The song wrapped gently around her body and soothed her heart. The tension in Lilith’s wide eyes melted away, and her soft eyelids slowly fluttered.
Feeling her body grow heavy, she staggered and leaned against the window. She slid down the frame and sat back against the door, letting herself be enveloped by the man’s singing.
“Only those blessed by spirits can hear their voices. If you do happen to hear them, please don’t ignore it. They’re just searching for someone to listen, missing friends who vanished thousands of years ago.”
“Ah…”
“I feel so sorry for those spirits. That’s why I write poems and sing songs for them.”
“That’s… sad.”
“Isn’t it? So let me ask again. Can you hear the voices of spirits?”
Lilith, who had been blankly gazing up at the sky, slowly turned her head. The man’s eyes were filled with a freshness that resembled the leaves on the trees. Looking into those eyes, Lilith gave a small nod.
“I hear something strange. But I don’t know if it’s the voice of a spirit.”
“If you want to understand their stories, keep focusing on the voice. The more you recognize it and try to listen, the clearer they’ll become to you.”
“If I listen to their stories… will they be happy?”
“That is…”
Just as the man was about to say something, a clearer and more familiar sound of footsteps reached Lilith’s ears. Her head immediately turned toward the door. Teia was getting closer and closer.
The heavy peacefulness that had weighed on her body shattered sharply with Teia’s presence. Lilith jumped up and hurried to the door to greet him.
Click.
“If you keep wandering around like this, it won’t be good for your ankle,” Teia said as soon as he entered the room, locking the door behind him and lightly tickling Lilith’s chin with his finger. Lilith let herself enjoy his touch and quickly hugged him tightly.
It was the master’s kindness she could enjoy only because her ankle was injured. Teia supported her hips and waist and lifted her slightly.
In just a few steps, they reached the bed, and Lilith had to reluctantly get down from his arms.
“Was it very hot today? You’ve opened all the windows.”
Through the wide-open windows, translucent curtains fluttered lightly outside.
“Huh?”
The man Lilith had been talking to until a moment ago, whom she had immediately forgotten when Teia appeared, came back to her mind.
Lilith stretched her neck again toward the balcony and looked for the tree. Only thick shadows of the tree were cast where the man had been sitting, as if he had gone somewhere.
When Teia closed the window, the fluttering curtains calmed down quietly. Seeing Lilith looking outside, a questioning expression appeared on Teia’s face.
“Why? Did something happen?”
“Earlier, some person—was it even a person? Ah! I heard a very interesting story!”
With a somewhat confused expression, Lilith babbled incoherently. Teia sat on the edge of the bed, fiddling with her hand, paying close attention to her chattering.
Seeing her excited like that, he could tell she wasn’t hiding anything. But her speech was unorganized and broken, as if she was forgetting things momentarily.
“So the spirits are sad.”
“Because all the werebeasts disappeared?”
“Yeah.”
“It’s already been thousands of years since the werebeasts disappeared, so wouldn’t the spirits have dried up and died by now?”
A bleak response came, devoid of any childlike innocence. When Lilith pouted her lips, Teia casually bit her protruding lips and let go.
“And honestly, if you keep longing for and searching for something for thousands of years, wouldn’t that be an unhealthy obsession by now?”
“I think I could follow Teia like that, but you don’t want to do it for thousands of years?”
Since her feelings had been discovered, Lilith had become recklessly honest. Every time Teia saw her innocently and unconsciously tempting him like this, his chest ached tightly.
It even felt a bit hard to breathe. Today, too, he lost his words for a moment, gazing at her, then touched her earlobe with his finger and laid her down on the bed.
“What you feel is love toward your master.”
Though it was a contradictory answer like “If you do it, it’s adultery; if I do it, it’s romance,” Lilith, who had permission, just smiled happily.
Even in the stuffy room, the two quickly became entwined like one body.
