Chapter 128
Whenever I passed out during labor, Damian would always catch me to keep me from cracking my skull, and said it was to preserve manpower. So I trusted him, and I leaned into him.
Wrapped in a firm chest and the soft scent of skin warmed through his uniform, I felt true peace for the first time in ages.
“Damian… I forgot my medicine.”
Looking up from the crook of his arms with my most pitiful expression, I met his eyes. They widened, just a little, startled.
To pull this off, to suggest we were close, to make it look like something more, there was no choice but to use his name.
Forgiveness is always faster than permission.
“…Understood.”
Stiffly, Damian reached into his coat and placed the pill into my mouth.
“You… what are you doing with the guard…?”
Watching from the side, Enoch looked stunned, his voice trailing off into stammering. From the look on his face, I could guess exactly what was running through his head.
“All those years…was there not even a moment when you liked me?”
I finally understood why Enoch kept dragging our conversation into emotional territory.
It wasn’t me who had lingering feelings. It was him.
This was all for show, wanting me to see him with Viviana, wanting a reaction.
He’d hoped I’d break down and beg him not to go.
But revolution or prison, wherever people gather, there’s always some petty drama waiting to happen.
There was no need to explain I have no regrets. There’s a much easier way.
I placed my hand lightly on Damian’s cheek and smiled sweetly at Enoch.
The best method? Let them watch. Let them feel it.
Damian flinched slightly, but didn’t pull away.
I stood tall, voice calm, posture proud, and introduced him.
“Oh, he’s the guy I was engaged to before you. It was a complete coincidence that we ran into each other in prison. As for Number 30, he’s just a compulsive liar with delusions. Anyway, no reason to feel bad about you.”
I glanced sideways at Damian.
Enoch was staring at him, clearly trying to catch a lie.
Since Damian was such a by-the-book kind of man, I half expected him to scold me: “Prisoners are not allowed to refer to guards by name. You’ll be escorted to solitary immediately.” But thankfully, he was quick on the uptake.
“I came here as a guard to protect Beatrice Kido. The broken engagement from childhood… that was due to circumstances beyond our control.”
His tone and face were as lifeless as ever, but he still lied for me.
Then, looking like he’d rather do anything else, he added:
“I’ve always been watching over her.”
I mean, I’m grateful, but wasn’t that a bit much?
He helped me to my feet, letting out a deep sigh like someone stepping into their ‘sage time.’
But the Damian effect worked better than expected.
Enoch’s expression darkened in an instant.
“Since when were you two like that? So you’d been seeing him behind my back all along?”
I had no idea why he was acting like the betrayed one, but it looked like I’d finally figured out how to trigger that murderous rage.
I gave a casual shrug and smiled mockingly.
“Why do you care? You’re the one who cheated first. What, are you jealous now?”
“That’s not the point. For all I know, you cheated first. So when did it start? Were you meeting your ex-fiancé when you were still engaged to me? Is that why you came to this prison?”
As Enoch’s face grew more twisted with agitation, a cold green flash appeared behind him.
Sensing the chilling aura of an ability wielder, Enoch flinched and turned around.
“Is there someone else you’re engaged to?”
Johann swept his eyes across Enoch, Damian, and Number 30 with a blank expression.
One by one, he glared at them all, then ruffled his hair in frustration.
“Damn. You sure rack up a lot of fiancés.”
Though honestly… if we could exclude Number 30, that’d be great.
