Chapter 12
“The Eclard Church plans to formally refuse that request. So please be aware of this, Saintess, and do not pay attention to the affairs of the West.”
“Do not pay attention? Ah. Did the Emperor pay too little offering while requesting the Saintess’s dispatch? So you mean to stall for time to raise the price?”
“Do not mislead. My position is solely to protect you, Saintess.”
The Pope ground his teeth and raised his voice.
“Why would the Emperor suddenly change his mind, announce the Devil’s descent, and even demand the dispatch of the Saintess?”
“Well. Isn’t it because the Exorcists Your Holiness sold were terribly unsatisfactory?”
“It means that man found a clue to be certain of the Deposed Crown Prince’s tracks! That his nephew is trapped in Conrad Castle, and that he absolutely cannot come out alive! He prattled on like that with his own mouth! Now, do you still not know the Emperor’s intent?”
Unable to suppress his passion, he slammed the table roughly. Then he shouted at Elena, who was busy dodging the tea splashing from her cup.
“The Emperor intends to harm even you, Saintess, using the excuse of saving his nephew!”
“Yes. So?”
“Saintess! Did you hear me properly?”
“I heard, so I answered. You said if I go to Conrad now, I might die, so we must refuse the request for exorcism.”
Elena said that, then abruptly lifted the teapot placed on the table. The Pope flinched and pulled his body back. As if she didn’t see that evasion full of wariness, she nonchalantly began to fill his empty cup with tea.
The Pope stared blankly back and forth between the teacup and her, like a person who had forgotten he was spewing rage just a moment ago. The Saintess’s face seen through the rising steam was incredibly composed.
“What are you doing right now…….”
“Since Your Holiness worries for me so much, I am thinking I should leave the Grand Temple for convalescence for a while. It just so happens I was getting bored of staying in the Grand Temple anyway.”
At the word convalescence, the Pope’s eyes grew even wider. In other words, the Saintess was saying she would leave the Grand Temple on her own feet and go into hiding. It was truly the most ideal conclusion the Pope could imagine.
This was something he had to accept without even asking for reasons. Having concluded thus, the Pope immediately wore a smile all over his face.
“You have thought well. If there is a place you want, please speak. Not only monasteries but we will also provide as many villas owned by the Order as you like.”
“It just so happens there is a place I want to go.”
“Anywhere…….”
Just say the word—the Pope’s mouth, which was about to ask for her opinion with an uncharacteristically humble attitude, stopped while open.
“Saintess. The tea is enough now.”
The tea was on the verge of overflowing. But Elena did not stop. The hot tea with steam rising flowed over like water pouring from a burst dam. The Pope let out a short scream and pulled his body back.
“Western Conrad Territory.”
“Are you joking right now, aack!”
“My convalescence spot will be there.”
The Pope grabbed his wrist where the tea had splashed and jumped up. Then he looked at Elena, who had thrown the teapot at him, with an expression of disbelief.
Since she didn’t intend to hit him squarely in the first place, the teapot only managed to make a steaming yellow stain on the Pope’s vestments, which were dangling with jewels, but the problem was that it looked exactly as if he had wet himself in fear.
“What is the meaning of this!”
“It just so happens there is a festival next month, so I can just announce the existence of the new Devil and that I will exorcise it on that day.”
“Elena! Did I not say no!”
The Pope, flustered by his clothes soaked in tea, shouted like a scream.
“Not this time. Absolutely, Conrad Castle is absolutely forbidden! This time, even you might not be able to return!”
“Cut the b******t, Father.”
The Pope, who was raising his voice with a red face, glared with wide eyes. He inhaled forcibly like a person being strangled at the title he was hearing for the first time in years.
