After eating, her destination was the library. At the marquisate, new books arrived every three months. A system established by the old lady, now bedridden. Luirene enjoyed looking at the new books that came in on schedule. If there was something interesting, she would borrow it and read.

As she moved toward the familiar corner, she spotted hair that had become all too familiar over the past few days. Dressed in a maid’s uniform, it was unmistakably Eneka. Luirene checked the section she was peeking at. Basic Letters and Writing.

“Are you trying to learn to read?”

Startled, Eneka jumped on the spot. She opened her mouth as if to shout, so Luirene quickly gestured for her to be quiet. Thanks to the old lady’s generosity, they were allowed in here, but in truth, it was taboo for servants of a noble house to use their masters’ library freely.

Eneka, too, seemed to know there was no benefit in making a commotion—she covered her mouth with her hand. But her fierce glare remained.

Luirene smiled awkwardly and turned to the bookshelf. She picked out a few basic books, the kind even someone who couldn’t read would recognize as such, and handed them to her. She started to leave quickly, aware that even this level of meddling might be unwelcome—but unexpectedly, Eneka spoke to her.

“You… can you read?”

“I can read and write.”

In truth, she could also read poetry and compose sentences, but she knew Eneka wasn’t asking about that level, so she answered simply. Eneka looked down at the books she had selected, hesitating. Luirene was convinced the girl had a rather proud personality.

“Do you need help?”

“What’s your angle?”

“Pardon?”

“Why are you offering to help me? Just a few days ago, we hadn’t exchanged a single word.”

“I was taught not to ignore someone in need.”

Hopper had shown through his own life how important it was to live with kindness toward others.

That nature had saved Luirene, who had nearly frozen to death on the street, and had raised her into the person she was today. The principles she learned from Hopper applied equally, no matter how prickly the other person might be.

Eneka seemed to hesitate. Luirene waited without rushing. Just as a worry flickered that she might act prickly and leave like last time, Eneka spoke.

“I want to learn to read.”

“…….”

“I tried to teach myself… but it’s not easy, in many ways.”

“Everyone struggles at first.”

“…….”

“But having a guide makes it faster.”

Luirene looked toward the window where the sun was shining brightly.

“I’m currently helping care for the old lady. I have about an hour free after breakfast. If you’re willing, how about meeting here then?”

“…You really mean to help me?”

“Only if you want.”

Eneka bit her lip. Unlike last time, she didn’t look upset. After a moment, she whispered quietly.

“…Sorry for snapping at you before.”

“…….”

“I thought you were like the others who pick on me.”

“It’s fine.”

“You look about my age. Why don’t you speak more casually?”

Her much-softened attitude was as good as acceptance of the offer.

Late spring—weather perfect for holding a riding competition.

The gentle sun was mild enough that standing still was no burden, and the racetrack, with its neatly lined fences, glowed silver as the dust caught the sunlight.

Beyond the fences stood an old-fashioned grandstand and a row of colorful tents. These had been prepared for the young ladies who had come to watch the day’s competition. Though there was still time before the start, over half the seats were already taken.

The area sparkled with all manner of accessories and dresses, as if a thick perfume might waft from it even without looking. Several young men were loitering about there. Meanwhile, Hitaon, having finished his preparations upon arrival, stood in the shade of a large, broad tree, tending to the horse he would ride today.

Excited to be in a crowded place after so long, the black horse kept snorting and tossing its head. Hitaon, holding the reins firmly, kept his voice low and stroked its heated neck.

“Ebony. No need to get worked up yet.”

Apparently quite pleased with the name it had been given, Ebony let out a strong snort.
