Chapter 92
Maeve ignored the plan Prince Declan had brought up as a supposed clever move and pulled the horse’s reins.
Soon, leading a very dissatisfied-looking Bebe and an Ambrox who was simply whining because he was hungry, she drove stakes into an inconspicuous spot and tied them up.
Prince Declan was startled when Maeve casually pulled a stake and a wooden mallet from her waist.
“Do you always carry those around?”
“I usually keep them in my bag.”
The two soon walked back toward the village entrance.
Before entering, Prince Declan looked at Maeve and asked.
“We’re still sticking to that, right?”
“To what?”
“That… setup about the runaway young master and the maidservant.”
“No. We are not going to mix words with people as much as possible. No, especially you, Prince Declan.”
“Is there a need to emphasize that specifically?”
Maeve stared at him without a word.
Prince Declan shut his mouth.
For about three seconds.
“……But.”
“I’ll go alone.”
“No, let’s go together! How can I send you alone to a place like that? I cannot permit it.”
Who does he think he is, permitting or not permitting?
“Maeve. You’re speaking out loud right now.”
“Who do you think you are, permitting or not permitting?”
“Thank you for speaking politely.”
A moment of silence passed, and Prince Declan fell into thought, unable to answer immediately. To anyone, Maeve looked much smaller and weaker than him. In reality, that small woman was much stronger, but regardless of that, he simply did not feel right about it.
After much deliberation, Prince Declan said this:
“……I have a duty to look after my people. Even if you only stayed there for a few years, you too are a citizen of Lutea…….”
Before his words could go any further, Maeve grabbed one of his arms and yanked it downward. Prince Declan’s knees immediately buckled, bringing him face-to-face with her.
Before Prince Declan could protest, she pulled the hood attached to his cloak over his head.
“Don’t show your face to others. Since you have a large build, Prince Declan, you look somewhat threatening as long as your face is covered. Here, hold this too.”
Prince Declan’s eyes grew round. He had never received this kind of evaluation before.
“I understand.”
To live up to expectations, he gripped Fionechta’s greatsword with a determined face. Maeve was about to say something more but just stopped. As if she were praying—
After muttering something while looking into the air, she walked past the village entrance and inside first.
It was a time just heading toward noon. This meant that everyone who was going to wake up was already awake. The village looked like an ordinary rural village. It would have appeared even more natural if their appearances had not been uniformly so excessively shabby.
In the very center of the village was a well. It was one of the reasons Maeve and Prince Declan had to stop by this village no matter what.
The people looked at them without hiding their curiosity. This was no wonder, as Prince Declan was looking around with a greatsword on his shoulder, putting on an excessively menacing act.
Maeve, not knowing that the Prince would act like such an actor, was busy walking while looking only straight ahead.
The two soon walked up to a man who had a stall laid out near the well. The villagers, apparently thinking they had observed them enough by now, were returning to their respective tasks.
Prince Declan continued to look around without lowering his guard.
“I don’t know how long it’s been since we’ve had outsiders.”
A scrawny man spoke while looking at Maeve. It was a stall that looked as if it had been laid out in a hurry to anyone.
“I know well what people like you need. Everything is right here.”
As the man guaranteed, there appeared to be many quite useful items. There was a small pocket knife, and there was also a cup with a chipped rim.
However, there was something more than useful—something absolutely necessary. A compass. A compass was there.
“This one is a bit expensive.”
The man said so bluntly, as if he knew Maeve would be interested. Maeve rolled her eyes, pretending to give up quickly.
“Then there’s nothing more to see. We just came because we needed drinking water. May we draw some water?”
“……Go ahead. Water is overflowing here, so……”
While Maeve and the man were conversing, Prince Declan was still standing with his back to Maeve, keeping a close watch on the front.
The villagers now seemed to have no interest in them. Their appearances were uniformly shabby. Unlike Prince Declan, who was merely dirty with mud, they were even thin in their limbs as if they could not even afford proper meals.
Prince Declan’s heart already ached. Whose land was this? He should have asked Maeve that first.
It was the moment he thought so and took a breath. A small child who came out of a dilapidated house caught his eye. That child was not alone. They were carrying a young baby on their back.
“Decky.”
Then Maeve called him.
Prince Declan belatedly came to his senses and looked back at her.
“He said we can use the well. Help me with filling the water.
