Chapter 98
Even though he had just been betrayed by the person closest to him, and even though he had been stabbed in the back by the person he newly came to trust, how could he, without ever getting tired of it, start every encounter on the premise of infinite trust equally for everyone.
Maeve was still irritated. The irritation she had been suppressing since the last incident surged up once again.
To think he still hasn’t come to his senses after what happened last time; she wondered if he would only come to his senses after experiencing something even worse.
While even having such thoughts internally, Maeve bit the inside of her cheek as if scolding herself.
But at this rate, it truly wouldn’t be strange if he died at any time. It was only a stroke of luck that he had met kind and clumsy people since then. People who were wicked on purpose would just sneer and spit even if the Prince forgave them. Not stopping there, they would use up everything they could use, starting with the man’s beautiful appearance, and then discard him.
It was truly frustrating and worrying.
“…….”
Maeve’s thoughts came to a dead stop.
Worrying.
She murmured that word to herself.
“Maeve?”
When her expression suddenly distorted strangely, Prince Declan asked as if worried. Maeve shook her head.
“I should bathe first.”
“Don’t you need to heat the water?”
“I’ve already heated it. I originally prepared it for you to use, Your Highness. I’ll just use it myself.”
“Ah, then. Please do.”
She submerged her body into the bathtub filled with warm water. The wooden tub was a perfect fit for her.
Maeve went in deep until the water reached her neck, then quietly closed and opened her eyes. She saw the wooden ceiling. She lowered her head again, filled her palms with water, and splashed it over her face.
Having a bath with warm water after such a long time felt like heaven. It felt as if the fatigue of her entire body was melting away. Just because her strength was strangely superior to others did not mean her physical stamina was at a monstrous level as well.
She closed her eyes again, focusing on slowly washing her hair. Then, the conversation she had with the Prince a moment ago, and those nonsensical events of the day, passed through her mind like a panorama, flipping pages rapidly.
Thinking about it now in a much calmer state, she realized she had been truly startled. That is, when she discovered the Prince had disappeared. She had naturally thought of searching for the Prince first, and she had even acted a bit recklessly, as if she had lost her mind and felt she had to find him immediately.
Yes. She admitted it. She was in a state of excitement beyond necessity at that time.
Because the Prince didn’t listen to her and ended up getting caught? Of course, she was livid for that reason too, but just.
……Just.
“……Damn it.”
She uttered a low sound to no one in particular and plunged her face deep into the water.
Maeve likewise, did not regret saying what she just said to him. However, apart from regretting it, she thought she might have gone a bit too far.
For some time now, she had been arbitrarily projecting her past self onto him. Not stopping there, she nagged him as if she were looking at her own past self.
What if that Prince had been a slightly more brazen type instead?
What if he had a personality that didn’t know gratitude? What if, regardless of his situation, he had a personality that was desperate to work her to the bone without knowing his place?
If that were the case, it would have been a bit easier. She wouldn’t have been this concerned about him.
Maeve eventually finished her bath early and stepped out of the tub.
As soon as she threw on some clothes and stepped out of the room, a savory smell wafted in. Simultaneously, a burnt smell surged forward. Maeve hurried toward the kitchen. Sure enough. The Prince, who had started a fire alone and was stirring a pot diligently, looked back at her.
Prince Declan looked at her with a momentarily stupid expression, then hurriedly turned his head away and said, “It’s all done.”
“I smell something burning.”
“The bottom always burns a little.”
Maeve reached her hand out to the Prince as if silently asking for the spoon. The Prince raised the hand holding the spatula high.
It was a height she couldn’t reach even if she stood on her tiptoes. Maeve was slightly flabbergasted by the sight of the Prince using that to his advantage.
“It’s all done, so sit down.”
The Prince spoke in a commanding tone. Unlike him.
“And dry your hair first. You’ll catch a cold.”
She did not know that the tips of his ears, which were partially visible, were red.
Because Maeve was busy half-heartedly wiping the moisture from her wet hair, just as he had pointed out.
