The moment their eyes met, Adrien froze. A surge of radiant guiding washed over her, leaving her dizzy.
“…You read the letter.”
Only then did Adrien glance down. The letter Samuel had sent was still in her hand.
“What brings you here at this hour, Captain Samuel?”
“I came for an answer.”
“…Were you waiting outside?”
“…Yes.”
“Come in.”
Samuel bowed his head slightly and stepped into the office. As he looked around, something complex flickered across his face.
Adrien deliberately pretended not to notice and walked to the sofa, the single seat of honor. It was a stark contrast to the way they used to sit pressed together on the long couch whenever they spent time here.
“Demanding an answer the moment you send a letter isn’t exactly gentlemanly.”
“I was impatient.”
“Or you thought the moment I finished reading it would be the best time.”
“…So you were shaken.”
Adrien bit the inside of her cheek instead of replying. She had fallen right into his trap.
“Yes. I was shaken. But that’s all.”
“Is it really… just that?”
Those steady green eyes looked straight into her.
“You’ve never had your guiding fully filled even once.”
At the same time, an overwhelming wave of guiding burst from Samuel.
Has he already mastered perfect control? The white glow of radiant guiding that had been absent before, was now clearly visible.
“—Ugh.”
Adrien inhaled sharply inside the light.
As her tension snapped, her entire body turned hypersensitive, as if every nerve had become an erogenous zone, tingling desperately. A fierce heat surged from deep within her in an instant. She clenched her fists, teeth grinding.
At this rate, she might moan from radiant guiding alone.
“If you dislike me, then choose me for the sake of the Empire.”
“……”
“You don’t have to make me your dedicated guide. You can come to me only when necessary. I’ll guide you and nothing more.”
“…Why are you doing this for me?”
Samuel lowered his head and smiled before dropping to his knees at her feet, taking both her hands.
“Because I like you.”
Adrien felt her heart plummet.
She couldn’t tell whether her racing pulse came from his confession or from the contact guiding flooding into her. Lost in the chaos, she lowered her gaze.
“I don’t understand you.”
“I don’t understand why you hate me either, Commander.”
I don’t… hate you. Not saying it was the last thread of Adrien’s restraint.
Every time he gently rubbed her hands, a dense current of guiding far beyond radiant levels seeped into her. Instinctively, she straightened her spine.
If her body collapsed, her heart would follow. Adrien finally pulled her hands free and pushed him away.
“This isn’t your problem. It’s mine.”
“Then we’ll solve it together.”
“If it were that simple, I would’ve done it long ago.”
“So you intend to carry unnecessary pain alone for the rest of your life?”
“Yes. So now that your future is bright, find another Esper. If you want, I can even introduce you to someone suitable—”
Suddenly, Samuel braced his hand on the back of her chair and leaned in. Their lips were suddenly inches apart.
Close breath. Close eyes. Close guiding.
Adrien stopped breathing altogether. His gaze pinned her in place.
“Liar.”
Samuel whispered, smiling.
“If you meant that… why are you frozen right now?”
“……”
“You could push me away. So why don’t you?”
His soft red tongue briefly traced his own lips.
“Why are you staring only at mine?”
For the briefest instant, his lips brushed hers.
That fleeting contact sent a violent surge of guiding crashing through her. At the same time, the final fragile thread holding her back snapped.
Adrien seized his face and crushed her mouth against his. She bit and sucked at his lips desperately, drawing in power so intense it numbed her mind.
She devoured him as if she might consume him whole—gripping his jaw, forcing his mouth open, thrusting her tongue inside. Her tongue swept relentlessly over his palate and inner lips.
Unable to close his mouth under the pressure, saliva spilled from the corner of Samuel’s lips.
For the first time in her life, Adrien understood what it meant for a kiss to be sweet. They were only kissing, yet half her sanity had already dissolved.
Everything inside his mouth felt like melting sugar laced with something intoxicating. Otherwise, there was no explanation for the blazing heat pooling low in her body from a kiss alone.
“Haah… Take it off.”
