Chapter 183

That soldier from my memory had immediately tried to strike me back.
Ironically, it was on the first floor—when the major raised his hand to strike me—that the memory came rushing back. That was why I couldn’t dodge his blow.
All because of a memory I never wanted, one that was utterly useless.
But when that soldier tried to hit me, what I had done in the past became incredibly useful at that moment. I drove my knee straight between his legs.
“Ugh!”
Instead of the pillar, I grabbed the two fleshy lumps hanging beneath it. The moment I squeezed hard, the major gasped and shuddered violently. When I clenched even tighter, his eyes rolled back.
He looked like he wanted to hurl curses at me, but no sound came out—just choked gasps as he desperately tried to pry my hands away with his stiff fingers. Even as he grabbed my hair, yanking so hard it felt like it would tear out, I refused to let go, clinging on with vicious determination.
In the old memory, the soldier had collapsed, and my fellow nurses and I had beaten him until he could no longer fight back. But now, I was alone. I had no intention of letting go until the major passed out, crushing that disgusting flesh in my grip with all my strength.
Thud!
“Ghk!”
He punched me hard in the head. A dull, splitting pain shot through my skull, and my hands instinctively loosened, releasing his weak spot.
“You… b***h… I could kill you… and it still wouldn’t be enough…”
The second he broke free, he doubled over, clutching himself just like that soldier had, groaning as he knelt. Seizing the moment while he was still dazed, I scrambled under the bed for the revolver—but he grabbed my ankle before I could reach it.
‘No, just a little more…’
I clawed at the carpet, fighting not to be dragged back, but just before my fingers could brush the gun, I was yanked out.
“Ugh…”
He flipped me onto my back, his hands closing around my throat like he meant to snap my neck. Through gritted teeth, his voice came out ragged.
“You don’t squeeze it like that. Let me show you how.”
My vision darkened at the edges. The strength drained from my hands as they clawed uselessly at his grip. Only when I went limp did he finally let go.
Rip.
The sound of fabric tearing. As his hands tore open my blouse, I found myself wishing he had just killed me instead.
“Stealing one of our own women is a crime, but raping the enemy? That’s no sin at all. Learned that from experience.”
“Johann…”
My fading vision sharpened again. But I couldn’t move. The only resistance left in me was to stare up at the wide-open window above me and force out a strained whisper.
“Johann… Hhk…”
“Johann?”
The major lifted my skirt and sneered.
“Calling a name that isn’t his—do you really think he’ll come?”
“Ugh…”
Where could that man whose name I don’t know be? Wherever he was, he must have already been arrested. The futility of calling someone who could never answer only made me feel more wretched. Seeing me like that, the major smirked and yanked down my bloomers.
“Shall we see how a Falkland sow tastes after so long?”
Just then, a rapid vibration against the floorboards sent tremors up my spine. I lifted my gaze and saw a vision—an angel raising an axe high above the head of the devil trying to violate me. The blade glinted red under the thick afternoon sun, drenched in bloody light.
Even if it was just a hallucination, the sight was so mesmerizing that I could only stare in awe—until the moment the angel swung the axe down at the devil’s neck and shouted at me. That was when I came back to my senses and realized it wasn’t an illusion at all.
“Close your eyes, Dana!”
…Dana?
In that instant, another fragment of my lost memories returned. This man—who had once watched in shock as I punished an insolent soldier. Our first meeting, and the first words he ever spoke to me,
“Dana?”
And my reply:
“That’s correct—though it’s rude to address me so familiarly on the first meeting.”
…I was Dana?
The shock was so great that I missed the instruction to close my eyes.
Thud!
“Ghh…”
I saw with my own eyes the moment the axe blade embedded itself under the Major’s neck.
I also saw the Major fall sideways from the force, then immediately try to rise again, only for the man to stomp on his head with his boot. I saw the red blood splatter as the axe, deeply lodged in the major’s flesh, was pulled out.
“Cough…”
With each beat of his heart, blood gushed out, and the Major tried to futilely block the wound with his palm. The man drove the axe back down with precision. This time, bone and flesh splattered in every direction.
At that point, I couldn’t bear the scene before me any longer. I looked away, but the man raised the axe high again, and I saw his face. I gasped in horror.
An angel with the face of a devil.
The unfamiliar expression on a familiar face was more unbearable than the sight of a person being torn apart. I tightly shut my eyes.
Thud!
“Hah…”
This time, the blow missed. I thought it missed because the breath of someone still alive, struggling in pain, hadn’t ceased.
It missed again, and then again. The axe blows, which were always so precise from the man, seemed off.
“Gkh…”
Thud!
“Ghh, ugh…”
But as the steady rhythm of the axe continued, and the ragged, painful breaths that almost seemed to stop, I realized the man had never missed with the axe.
He was deliberately keeping the major alive for as long as possible, torturing him with the intent to make him suffer before killing him.
