The corporal turned around and saw Johann Renner, covered in blood from head to toe, emerging from the dining room with a gun pointed at them.

“Put the weapon down and raise your hands!”

The handgun the man held was military-issued. His instinct told him it was the major’s. The blood the man was drenched in was the major’s. Immediately, the corporal understood the situation.

The major had been taken down by that cunning spy. They had fallen victim to the woman.

Just moments ago, the woman had been sobbing weakly, but now she was aiming a revolver at them. He had thought she was a victim, but she was actually part of the same group. Furious, the corporal was about to shoot her first, but then…

Bang!

“Ghh…”

The bullet fired by the man pierced the corporal’s chest. As he collapsed, he managed to pull the trigger, but his aim was off, and the bullet lodged in the ceiling, missing the woman.

“If you don’t want to die, drop your gun!”

“D-don’t shoot!”

The rookie, terrified by the sight of his senior gasping on the floor, immediately dropped his gun and raised both hands.

At that moment, when the two gunshots had intersected, Mrs. Werner, who had been tied up in the dining room, felt a fleeting hope. However, her hope was quickly dashed when she heard an unfamiliar voice telling them not to shoot, followed by the owner of the voice being dragged into the dining room.

‘Our army has lost…’

It was still shocking to think that the same ‘Mr. Renner,’ the man who had been laughing and chatting at the dinner table just this morning, was now the one tying up and mercilessly subduing the soldiers on the floor.

She had thought the major was obsessing over the Renner couple for personal, unprofessional reasons, but she never imagined it was because he suspected them of being spies. If she had known that earlier, she would have never let them under the same roof.

‘Then, this wouldn’t have happened.’

Her eyes trembled as she looked at her husband, sprawled on the floor, bound like a beast.

Though the blood had stopped flowing from his nose, the groans had ceased long ago. He seemed to still be breathing, but he hadn’t regained consciousness.

‘He was supposed to be locked up in the basement. No, we should’ve just run away together before that devil came back.’

Her husband had sent her and their daughter-in-law down to the basement and, under the mayor’s orders, had gone upstairs to bring in the soldiers. The moment the sounds from the first floor reached her, she regretted having kept him for so long. She had kept asking him what had happened.

“Principal, is Rize at home?”

It was at that moment Johann Renner had returned.

“…I didn’t know; I just got here.”

“Wait… why is the officer’s hat here at home?”

She wasn’t able to catch the rest of their conversation, but the sounds of heavy footsteps and a dull noise overhead were unmistakable.

After that, dull sounds continued to echo from somewhere in the house, but she hesitated, gripping the doorknob, yet ultimately did not go out to check.

“Ignore any sounds, and don’t come out.”

She should have never listened to her husband’s words. Had she, she would have known earlier that he had been beaten by the spy, had his head smashed, and was lying unconscious on the floor of the first-floor hall. She could have run out and reported it before he came down to bind them.

She had pleaded with the man to at least let her confirm her husband’s condition, or simply lay him down properly so he could rest peacefully, but…

‘That man isn’t human. He’s a devil.’

Recalling what that devil had said as he shoved a tea towel into her mouth sent shivers through her body.

The devil had silenced the soldiers like everyone else, and then stood in the entrance of the dining room, whispering something to the woman. It seemed like he was giving her instructions.

When the woman nodded, the man moved as if he was about to cup her face in his hands, but stopped just before contact, looking remorseful, and instead pressed his lips to her forehead.

After killing two people, and nearly killing another, he was acting so tender and affectionate toward his woman—how disgusting. If her mouth hadn’t been covered, she would have cursed him out.

The man left the dining room. After a moment, sounds of water began coming from the second floor. He was washing the blood off.

‘Does that mean they won’t kill us?’

The woman waited in silence, watching as the woman sitting in the dining room entrance, holding a terrifying gun, stared blankly into the air.

It was hard to believe this woman was a spy; she looked so innocent, even naïve. She still seemed innocent now, wiping her tears with trembling hands as she sobbed. The man was a devil, and nothing she could say would get through to him, but perhaps the woman…

“Ugh, ugh…”

She wanted to plead with the woman to release her husband, but her mouth was gagged, and there was no way out. Mrs. Werner, trying to catch the woman’s attention, looked at her with pleading eyes.

‘Please, please…’

She silently begged that she would be merciful. She hoped the woman would understand they had not acted willingly, and that she would show some compassion.

The woman silently stared at her, then turned her gaze to the unmoving man, her husband. She tensed, fearing the woman would do to him what had been done to her husband, but the woman sighed deeply, stood up, and began walking toward her.
