‧₊˚ ☁️⋅♡𓂃 ࣪ ִֶָ☾.

The woman, who had been staring down at the unconscious man, glanced briefly at the spot where he lay, then reached for the cloth stuffed in his mouth.

Was she trying to remove it so he could breathe more easily? For a moment, the Mrs. was grateful that she wasn’t like her husband, a devil.

Knock, knock, knock.

“It’s time for the roll call!”

As the village chief’s voice echoed from outside the door, the woman got startled and shoved the cloth back into the unconscious man’s mouth. She looked surprised as she hurried to the dining room door, peering outside to look around.

There, bound in the corner, Werner glanced around at the people. His eyes were full of uncertainty, unsure of what to do.

‘Let us go. You know the chief will get suspicious if we don’t show our faces.’

Even with a gun pointed at their backs, it would be better to be freed and at least face the chief. That way, he could silently convey the danger to him.

“Just a moment, Chief!”

But the woman didn’t release them. Instead, she called out in a loud, surprisingly bright voice as she looked outside.

“Johann! It’s roll call time!”

Before long, the man came running down and passed in front of the dining room. The man, who signaled for her to keep an eye on them, was now as clean and neat as usual, erasing all signs of the violence.

As he disappeared from sight, the sound of the front door opening followed shortly after.

“Chief, thank you for your hard work.”

“Mr. Renner, wasn’t today the day you were supposed to go to the bunker…?”

“No, I don’t have any appointments today.”

His voice had returned to its usual friendly and gentle tone, a complete contrast to just a moment ago.

“Rize is busy cooking and can’t leave the stove right now.”

“I heard Mrs. Renner’s voice. But where are the Werners?”

The Werners were always home during roll call time. So if they weren’t there, the chief would likely grow suspicious.

“Ah… the principal and his family…”

‘Say we’re gone. Make up some weak excuse that’s unlike us.’

“They just received a letter from the front, and… right now I’m in no position to speak. I’m not sure what to do…”

But the crafty devil had already planned for this.

“Ah, I see…”

His tone was so solemn that the chief misunderstood and thought he had received news of his son’s death. He didn’t ask any further questions.

‘No, don’t leave. Don’t go.’

Once the chief left, no one else would come to this remote house.

“Ugh! Mmmph!”

In desperation, she tried to make a sound, pushing against the cloth in her mouth with her tongue…

“Hmph…”

The woman standing in front of the door glared at her, then aimed her gun at the man lying on the floor. It was a warning—if she made a wrong move, her husband would be killed.

So innocent, inside and out. Compassionate, even. But she was the wife of that man.

While Mrs. Werner bit her lip, holding back tears, outside, the conversation continued calmly.

“Please convey my deepest condolences to the Werners.”

“I will do that.”

“Well then, have a pleasant… no, ahem, anyway, see you tomorrow.”

“Please be careful as the road is getting darker.”

With that overly cordial farewell, the door was shut. While she wept in despair, the two devils moved swiftly.

The man came down carrying three or four bags, then entered the kitchen with an empty one. After a while, he emerged from the kitchen with the bag, which was heavy and seemed ready to burst. He had filled it with provisions.

‘Preparing to escape.’

The man also raided the soldiers’ weapons and equipment—pistols, knives, binoculars—and shoved them into the bag.

“Umm… is this enough?”

“Already changed your clothes?”

While the man was packing, the woman, who had disappeared upstairs, came back completely transformed. Her messy hair was neatly styled and pinned up, topped with a wide-brimmed hat.

Instead of her wrinkled old clothes, she wore an expensive outing dress, the kind a wealthy woman might wear. She had even applied makeup, so the bruise on her left cheek was barely noticeable from a distance.

“What about the mask?”

“I packed it. Here, yours.”

“Thank you. Stay here for a moment.”

As the woman arrived, the man disappeared with the luggage. The woman took a fine silk handkerchief from her expensive handbag, dipped it into the water kettle on the table, and did something incomprehensible.

The man returned shortly after, looking even more absurd. He had put pomade in his hair, as if he was going to some fancy place.

Dressed in a white shirt and black pants, the man began putting on the items he had brought. When he tied the black tie, Mrs. Werner’s gaze, which had been watching with disbelief, began to tremble as her eyes landed on the jacket.

‘That’s the Major’s jacket.’

When the man donned the officer’s jacket that Major Felkner had left by the entrance and put on the cap he had carelessly thrown on the second floor, the spy from Falkland had become a Highland officer. It was then that Mrs. Werner realized their true intentions.

‘They’re planning to escape disguised as military officers.’

The two, one disguised as a noblewoman and the other as a Highland officer, faced each other. Their expressions were darker than the growing night.

After silently staring at each other, when the woman forced a smile, the man, as if resigned, grabbed the candlestick from the table.
