Still, believing the Major’s words is even more absurd—but judging by my doubts, I still can’t fully trust this man. He answers my questions well now, but there’s still a suspicious edge in his eyes.

“You’ll get sucked in like that.”

The man who had just washed pulled my shoulder back from the fire’s heat.

“Ah… sorry.”

Startled, I almost collapsed but he quickly steadied me, then hesitated. His gaze was fixed on the fireplace.

He sat me in the rocking chair before the fireplace, picked up the poker, and thrust the half-burned paper into the flames. It turned to black ash and disappeared instantly.

“We won’t get caught.”

He seemed unaware of my thoughts, but I couldn’t take my eyes off the lingering phrase still etched in my mind.

“How did a stupid person like me become a spy?”

He looked at me with surprise, paused the wood-stirring, then frowned deeply.

“Dana… don’t think like that. You were smart before, and you still are.”

“You promised not to lie again.”

“The you now is just sick. You’ve just forgotten most of what you knew because of your illness…”

“That means someday I’ll get better and regain all my memories, right?”

“Dana, I…”

My sharp question visibly troubled him.

“…Even if you never recover your memory, that’s fine. I will love you the same.”

His discomfort and reassurance made sense. I’d come too far now to regain all I’d lost.

Though I’m recovering some memories, many were just delusions—not memories at all.

Like the other woman named Dana and his affair with her.

Now that I know I’m Dana, those scenes are just shameful fabrications my mind made up.

‘How many of the memories I believe I’ve found are really just delusions?’

I wanted to bravely ask him, one by one, to verify what was real. But today, something else had to come first.

‘Did you make me kill someone?’

I hesitated to ask directly, so I began by asking how we became soldiers and spies.

“So how did I become a spy? And if I wanted to be a doctor originally, why did I become a soldier?”

He looked troubled and closed his mouth. I gave him a pointed look, silently demanding an answer, but he just sighed and sank onto the bed.

‘Is he refusing to answer?’

I crossed my arms and pouted, preparing to sulk. Then finally, he answered.

“You couldn’t become a doctor because of family opposition…”

“Ah…”

Though he didn’t elaborate, I guessed it was because I was a woman.

“…Then I heard you served as a military nurse when the war broke out.”

“They opposed me becoming a doctor yet let me do the tougher work.”

He grimaced and sneered.

“It was probably to satisfy someone’s pride.”

Someone? Was he talking about my father?

“Anyway, that’s something even I can’t answer.”

That was the answer. He couldn’t answer. It seemed we really had separated and only reunited in the military.

“Dana?”

“Yes, but it’s rude to ask so bluntly at first meeting.”

So the delusions were actually memories after all.

“But a nurse is a civilian, isn’t she? How did I become a soldier?”

“You were commissioned as an officer during the infiltration operation at the command post.”

“An officer? What rank?”

“Second Lieutenant.”

“So you called me Lieutenant Loveridge once?”

He looked at me with a bitter smile after I got excited hearing about the rank.

“You were a soldier too?”

“Sort of.”

“What do you mean, ‘sort of’?”
