Chapter 252

Ever since regaining those memories, my feelings for Killian have only deepened.
‘But why is it that, after growing up as an adult, I somehow stopped loving this man?’
I looked up at Killian, watching as he drank his bitter coffee like it was a shot of liquor, and finally asked.
“Killian, did you ever do something wrong to me? I mean, before we got married.”
He just gave a wry smile that I couldn’t quite interpret and shook his head. It didn’t feel like a lie.
“Then why?”
“Why what?”
“Why aren’t you happy that I’m remembering things again?”
I’d half-wondered if he’d once done something unforgivable, and now he dreaded that I might recall it and fall out of love. Maybe that was why he didn’t seem to welcome the return of my memories.
“I am happy, Dana.”
“Liar.”
“It’s true.”
He tried to smile, but it didn’t take long for that smile to collapse into the same despair I’d seen the night before.
“It’s just… I’m afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“That the more you remember, the more likely you are to leave me.”
“Why would I ever do that? Unless you did something truly unforgivable, there’s no way I’d leave you.”
Killian just kept toying with his empty coffee cup, not answering.
“Right? You’ve never done anything like that… right?”
He finally sighed and replied,
“It’s just… I’m worried that if you find too many happy memories here, you’ll grow attached to this place and won’t want to leave.”
“Oh my gosh, that’s all it is? Why would I ever leave my knight? Don’t worry, Killian. I love you more than anything. I’m not the sort of person who could ever walk away from someone who saved my life.”
“I hope you’ll always feel that way.”
“When have I ever been ungrateful?”
“It’s not you. It’s me—I’m the one who doesn’t deserve you.”
“Killian, you’re the confusing one here. Sometimes I have no idea what you’re talking about and my head starts to hurt.”
“Maybe it’s just all the cold food you ate. Come on, let’s go outside and get some sun.”
He took my hand and led me out of the café, heading back toward the inn where we were staying.
“Let’s take the side streets, so we’re less noticeable.”
He guided me down a narrow alley, obviously wanting to avoid being seen—by soldiers who surely weren’t looking for us anymore.
“That’s right. We wouldn’t want any women falling for my knight in shining armor.”
I joked, obediently slipping my arm through his as we walked.
These alleys were so full of sunlight and flower pots perched on every windowsill that they felt less like backstreets and more like a charming promenade—a perfect place to stroll arm-in-arm with Killian.
“But why did we ever get separated in the first—mmph!”
We were chatting and just turned a corner when Killian suddenly clamped his hand over my mouth and pulled me behind a stack of crates. We crouched there, and a moment later, a man in uniform walked by.
“He’s just a soldier on leave.”
He was arm in arm with a girl about my age. They were just going out for a walk like us. But Killian seemed intent on avoiding even him, steering us on a long detour.
“He wasn’t even a military policeman…”
As I followed after him, I suddenly remembered the military police I’d seen back at the train station.
“Actually, you know what? One of those military police at the station looked strangely familiar.”
Killian stopped and studied me for a moment.
“Why do you think that? Did you remember something?”
“No, not exactly. It was just his back—he seemed really familiar, like someone I’ve seen a lot. I mean, wouldn’t that make him someone I know?”
“…..”
“Didn’t you think he looked familiar too? If he’s a soldier I know, you must know him as well.”
“I didn’t recognize anyone there.”
“I suppose if you had, you wouldn’t have tried to shoot…”
“Shh.”
As we passed a side street opposite the inn, Killian quickly covered my mouth again and pulled me back.
We were just across the main road from our inn, but he dragged me away, his eyes fixed on a pair of military police officers stationed outside the building. Two cars were parked out front—both empty, meaning there must be more people inside.
‘No… they couldn’t have discovered us already…’
Even as I tried to deny what was obvious, one of the military police officers opened our room window and leaned out.
‘That man…’
His figure looked familiar.
“Don’t look back.”
Killian whispered urgently, and I quickly turned away, hurrying my steps.
“Dana!”
But as someone called my name from behind, I couldn’t help but break the rule. I turned and locked eyes with the officer calling to me from the window.
And as I saw his face, the memory clicked.
‘Rupert?’
