“That’s not true. Your eyes were saying something else.”

“What did you buy?”

Trying to change the subject, I peeked into the paper bag he was holding. Inside were sandwiches, juice, and even a bottle of wine.

“Wine?”

“I just want to see you wearing that dress.”

“Let’s go.”

It seemed the only way to distract Killian from the dress was to leave the store, so I started walking away. Killian caught up, took my hand, and led me in the opposite direction—back the way we’d come.

‘Is he planning for us to eat back at the inn?’

But even after passing the inn, he didn’t stop walking.

“Where are we going?”

“We’re going on a picnic.”

“A picnic?”

He’d been trying to buy me a dress, and now suddenly he wanted to go on a picnic. Normally, I’d think he was just trying to cheer me up, but today it felt like there was something else behind it.

“Why the picnic all of a sudden…?”

“Do you remember when we went on a picnic in the field of forget-me-nots while staying at Mrs. Bauer’s attic?”

“Of course I remember.”

“That day was so much fun.”

“It really was.”

Killian took me up the hill I could see from our inn room. We spread out a blanket beneath a tree in a field of forget-me-nots and had our lunch.

“Drink this. I bought it thinking you’d like it.”

“Are you trying to turn me into a drinker, like you?”

He kept urging me to try it, and to my surprise, the wine suited my taste. Maybe that’s why I ended up having a few glasses, or maybe it was because, just like that day, Killian started sketching my portrait. For a while, I forgot all my fears.

“Draw me with a flower crown too.”

Just like before, I made a crown of forget-me-nots and daisies. I put it on my head and begged Killian to draw another picture, but he only looked at me with a wistful gaze, never picking up his pencil.

“What’s wrong?”

“There’s something important missing.”

He plucked a forget-me-not and began weaving it around the ring finger of my left hand, making a flower ring.

He means the wedding ring was missing.

“At weddings, the vow is always, ‘until death do us part.’ I really hate those words now. Dana, let’s make a new promise.”

He paused, holding both my hands and gazing deeply into my eyes.

“I swear, not even death can part us. Even after we die, we’ll never leave each other, and we’ll love each other forever.”

“…”

“Come on, you too.”

I felt my buzz fading.

“Not even death can part us… so even after we die…”

As I stumbled through the vow, Killian finished tying the last knot in the flower ring and, with a satisfied smile, cupped my cheeks.

“Now, the groom may kiss the bride.”

“That’s what the priest says, not the groom…”

Wait. I’m sure I’ve heard Killian say that before…

“Ah!”

Just as a memory was about to surface, Killian kissed me so fiercely that it scattered every thought. He didn’t just claim my lips; it was as if he wanted all of me.

His lips fell on my face like a barrage of bullets, then wandered down my neck, and when they reached my collarbone, he laid me back on the blanket, marking my pale skin with red kisses, one after another.

His fingers slipped inside my clothes, loosening the ties and letting the fabric slip off my shoulders. His lips, after grazing my exposed neck, trailed lower and lower, seeking more of my bare skin.

His lips paused at the hollow between my b*****s, where the forget-me-not necklace rested. Instead of moving it aside, Killian pressed a kiss to the silver pendant with just as much affection as he showed me.

“Killian, what does this necklace mean?”

Killian looked at the necklace I’d lifted, a bitter expression on his face.

“Don’t you remember?”

“I haven’t recalled that memory yet.”

“If you’re going to recover anything, I hope it’s this one…”

I half expected him to tell me to remember on my own, but instead he lay down beside me and answered easily.

“You gave it to me.”

“So it really was mine.”

When the fire broke out, I’d recognized the necklace on his neck as mine, but I’d always wondered if I was right.

“You said, when you gave it to me…”

Killian took the necklace from me, his touch loving and gentle.

“If you open it, you’ll see who the man I love is.”

“Oh my god… Did I really confess so boldly?”

As my cheeks flushed with embarrassment, Killian’s smiling lips found me again and again.
