Chapter 49
Noticing Asha’s dampened spirit, Aswan looked up at the sky and let out a deep sigh. However, if Aswan were the type of brother who only stopped at the first verse, the relationship between Asha and Aswan would have been even closer. Aswan, having inhaled a breath, lowered his head again and continued speaking rapidly like a magpie.
“No, the more I think about it, the more it’s too much. Mother would have been appalled if she saw this. Don’t you remember? She said she didn’t care if you made someone cry or hit them in a dark place, so please just don’t have drunken habits. Haa. Asha, do you know the scariest reason for drunken habits? It’s that you don’t remember. I’m most scared that you might make someone cry and then not remember. What would you have done if I weren’t here? Is this the North?”
It was a long speech that even Asha, who intended to listen silently, was getting sick of. Did he think she was some kind of gangster? Of course, thinking of what she had done… she had nothing to say, but since there was a justifiable reason this time, Asha did not hold back and exploded with indignation.
“Stop! Would I have done that for no reason? That girl Beryl or whatever kept scratching at my insides! I did well. I should be praised just for not taking that young lady away and making her cry!”
“Beryl?”
Aswan, who had been playing the stern brother, sparkled his eyes at the appearance of an interesting character. Looking at him at times like this, he was no different from someone obsessed with gossip. Asha looked with cold eyes at Aswan, who didn’t hide his excitement and asked what was going on.
“…What happened? If it’s because of such an important matter, you should have told me sooner. Did she say she’d release a business similar to yours? Or is it a check? Ah, is she a relative of someone you fell out with because of the candy business? Is she acting all high and mighty in front of you because she succeeded?”
She didn’t know what kind of image she had with Aswan, but at the over-the-top guesses, Asha quickly opened her mouth. She felt that if she left him alone, every single guess related to her seventeen businesses would come out.
“It seems… Beryl Anderman… likes Harriet!”
To think there was a truth even trashier after revealing it. It was a fact she had realized for the first time in her twenty-five years of life. At the situation summarized in one sentence, fire erupted from her roiling insides. It was to the point where she, the owner of the emotion, couldn’t handle it.
Where did they meet? Why does she like him? Does Harriet know?
Because tens of thousands of questions followed a single truth, her head throbbed with pain. As she tightly closed and then opened her eyes at the bleak reality, Aswan’s unexpectedly calm face came into view. Unlike someone obsessed with gossip, his expression clearly showed that his interest had fizzled out.
“So?”
“What do you mean, ‘so’?”
Asha doubted her ears as he even asked back in bewilderment.
“I’m telling you Beryl Anderman likes my husband! She loves him! Aswan, you do know what love is, right?”
She even shoved her face close, heating up with her explanation. But Aswan still had an indifferent face as he pushed away the clinging Asha with his index finger.
“So, I’m asking what the problem is.”
“The problem? There are many problems! There isn’t just one or two! Uh, so….”
Her runaway speech was suddenly blocked.
So what was the problem?… What was the problem?
Beryl Anderman loves Harriet. Primary, this sentence itself was extremely unpleasant, unsatisfactory, and the fact that it was annoying was the problem. But excluding Asha’s feelings, what other problem was there? Aswan poked at her vital points toward the speechless Asha.
“Harriet Bellstein is your husband, legally recognized by the law. Looking at your reaction, it doesn’t seem like that young lady has confessed to Harriet, either. Has anything harmed your reputation, dignity, or relationship due to just that young lady’s feelings?”
It hurts.
Aswan’s words pierce like a dagger.
“…Aswan, don’t poke at the vital points. It hurts.”
Asha, who shut her mouth tight, avoided Aswan’s gaze. She was afraid that if she stayed like this, she would end up agreeing with Aswan’s words. Her stomach was turning like this, and her brain felt like it would be crushed by the boiling heat, yet it was supposedly nothing? Asha bit her lip and then exploded with indignation.
