Chapter 160
It was all to ensure that no one would dare treat Macy poorly. He had brought her here without giving her any chance to object, and now, unexpectedly, she wanted to leave.
Did it really have to be this way? After all, Macy wouldn’t be attending any galas like the other young noblewomen to wear such jewels. There must be another way to make her position as the Duke’s mistress known…
The shopkeeper stood nearby, his eyes filled with eager anticipation, and Macy couldn’t bring herself to speak up. Instead, she just stared at Eren, who, sensing her discomfort, immediately commanded the shopkeeper.
“Purchase everything you’ve shown us so far.”
“Thank you, Duke Krygen!”
“Huh? Wait, hold on!”
Macy called out urgently, but the shopkeeper ignored her and only looked at Eren as he spoke.
“We also have some pearls we brought in from the Eastern Continent. Would you like to see them?”
“Ah, yes. I recall the pearls looking quite lovely last time. Bring everything that would suit this lady.”
“Of course, I’ll get them right away.”
“Wait, just a moment!”
It seemed that Eren had made up his mind to spend generously. The shopkeeper, smiling broadly, headed to the storeroom.
Since it was Eren who was footing the bill, the shopkeeper didn’t seem to care about Macy’s protests.
Afterward, Eren didn’t stop at the jewelry store. At every bespoke shoe store and famous tailor shop, if Macy so much as glanced at something, Eren bought it all.
At this point, Macy had begun to hesitate even looking at things she liked.
“Oh my, the lady has such a slim figure and smooth skin that any outfit suits her beautifully!”
As Macy nervously bit her lip and stared at the floor, the boutique staff swiftly began trying on various clothes on her, pushing her into the fitting room.
“Shall we try taking a deep breath, miss?”
“Hmmh!”
“It seems like it could be tightened a bit more. Try holding this strap.”
They placed Macy on a pedestal, and several staff members rushed to tighten the corset strings. Her waist shrank and her chest swelled.
They dressed her in a pink muslin dress with floral embroidery, braided her hair to the side, and decorated it with waterfowl feathers and flowers. Lace gloves were slipped onto her delicate hands, and calfskin shoes were placed on her feet.
The staff carefully examined Macy from head to toe, their sharp eyes scanning her for anything else to add. After a moment, they handed her a small palm-sized handbag with a satisfied smile, then drew back the curtain.
“How do you like this, Duke Krygen?”
Macy, who had been looking into the mirror, awkwardly turned around.
Eren, leaning against the armrest of the couch and reading the newspaper, raised his head. He slowly scanned her from head to toe, his gaze lingering on her so intently that Macy felt embarrassed.
Since she wasn’t used to wearing such clothes, she fidgeted with her lace gloves, feeling out of place.
“It’s fine.”
The evaluation was simple, but it was clearly a positive one. However, Eren’s expression didn’t seem overly pleased.
He wasn’t angry, but there was something off. It was as if he were trying to solve a difficult math problem rather than admiring the beauty of his beloved. Macy tilted her head, confused about his intentions.
“When everything is ready, send it to the Duke’s residence. The items that don’t need alterations should be loaded into the carriage.”
“Do you have to do that…?”
“Yes, of course.”
Once again, Macy’s opinion was dismissed.
The staff quickly closed the curtain again and started removing her clothes. When she returned to her original attire, another staff member began wrapping up items like hats and gloves. Macy saw this as her chance and quietly approached Eren, whispering to him.
“Can’t we find another way?”
“Why?”
His eyebrow arched, a bit skeptical.
“I don’t have anywhere to wear things like this.”
“You’re not buying them to wear somewhere.”
“That’s true, but…”
As she hesitated, he rested his chin on his hand, looking a bit bored as he spoke.
“Yes, I guess. It doesn’t have much of an impact, since I bought it all in such a half-hearted way.”
Half-hearted? She felt like she’d spent enough for a couple of houses.
“Should I buy you an island or something…?”
“No! I’m already getting plenty of attention!”
His expression was far too serious for a joke. Given the Duke’s wealth, it didn’t seem entirely impossible. Macy was startled and quickly responded.
“Or is it your reaction that’s the problem? You don’t seem to like it much.”
“I do. I do like it, but…”
“Like it, but…?”
