Chapter 183
“So, she wants to escape from me.”
Rubens’s lips twisted coldly. Sensing the cooling atmosphere, Nicholas anxiously asked with a concerned look.
“Then… what will you do with Macy?”
Rubens silently swirled his crystal glass. The ice clinked softly against the sides, adding a chilling sound to the tense silence.
When Rubens had first mentioned he might have made a mistake, there had been a hint of unease, but now, as his expression hardened, Nicholas couldn’t shake the feeling that something ominous was brewing.
There was only one way to handle someone who posed a risk of revealing secrets. To make sure they couldn’t speak—by taking their life.
Although Nicholas didn’t think Rubens would handle Macy that way, the coldness in his face made him wonder if that could actually happen.
“As you said, it’s still just a guess, so we need to investigate further. I’ve sent a spy to Ciseina, so we’ll know the truth soon enough.”
“Phew, I see.”
“If I’m right, there’s nothing that can be done.”
As Nicholas let out a sigh of relief, Rubens tossed back a strong drink and added, “We can’t allow someone who might reveal secrets to walk around freely.”
“…”
Nicholas’s face turned white.

“It’s almost finished.”
Macy met with Prince Benedict for a progress check on her painting.
Today, he had insisted that meeting in the daylight was fine, unlike usual evenings, so they met in broad daylight. He admired her painting with a satisfied smile, then tilted his head and gently suggested.
“It’s already good, but what do you think about softening the shadows a bit?”
“Which part?”
“The shadows on the river. I think it might bring the whole atmosphere to life. Oh, it’s just a personal suggestion, so feel free to ignore it.”
“No, I think it’s a good idea. I was actually wondering if the reflections on the water were a bit too sharp.”
Macy nodded in agreement. It was impressive how Prince Benedict had instantly pointed out the exact part she had been unsure about.
“What about the figures?”
She wanted to ask him more while she had the chance.
“Since I drew them quickly from a brief look, they feel a bit awkward, I think…”
“They don’t feel awkward at all. They’re perfect as they are. You can really feel the presence of the figures as if they’re right there. If you want to enhance that feeling, try focusing on the expressions of the characters, imagining what they’re thinking. The figure in the front will be more visible.”
“Oh, I see. I’ll try that.”
He really knew how to look at a painting—almost like a renowned art critic.
Macy had exchanged such evaluations with Kieran before, but Benedict had a different kind of presence. He respected her while offering clear suggestions for improvement, making his advice feel more professional.
‘I want to show him more of my paintings.’
If she became the court artist for Ciseina, would she be able to receive this kind of feedback whenever she wanted? This moment felt so rewarding.
“Next time, I’ll be able to see the completed piece. I’m really looking forward to the final version of this.”
“Thank you. I think the painting will turn out well thanks to you.”
As they continued talking, quite a bit of time had passed.
‘I’m glad we met in the daylight today.’
It felt like time passed in an instant because they were enjoying themselves.
“Take care on your way back, Your Highness.”
“Wait, Macy.”
“Yes?”
As Macy gathered her painting to leave, Prince Benedict stopped her. He quickly released his grip but seemed like he still had something to say.
“Umm… Have you eaten?”
“Yes, I had something before I came.”
“I see…”
He murmured, sounding a bit defeated. Maybe she had answered too quickly. She wondered if it made him feel like she was lying, trying to avoid his invitation.
“Would you like to have a meal together sometime? I need to stop by the art supply store today, and I’m not hungry right now.”
So, they made plans for another time. His expression immediately brightened.
“Yes! I know a great restaurant in Senew Street. It has a private room with a view of the Senew River, and it’s not crowded at all. I’ll make a reservation there.”
“Sounds great. I’ll treat you to celebrate the completion of the painting.”
“No, I should pay. I’m hosting someone important.”
“No, no, the important person is you. You gave me such a great opportunity, so let me pay.”
They both laughed as they playfully argued about who would pay. In the end, they agreed that Benedict would pay this time, and Macy would treat him next time.
Benedict seemed pleased with their arrangement.
