Chapter 222
That arrogance that she was still within Rubens’s grasp.
“Now I see I was mistaken to think you really know Macy. That’s why you act so confident.”
“And Your Highness acts like you know everything just from seeing her a few times.”
“Exactly. I’m surprised you don’t see what’s right in front of you. They say the closer you are, the less you see.”
Rubens let out a dismissive chuckle. Benedict continued unfazed.
“Macy knows exactly what she wants. Her priorities are clear. You’ve never been outside those priorities, so you don’t know how utterly decisive she can be with those outside it.”
While Rubens had always received love from Macy, Benedict had not. So in that regard, Benedict understood Macy more objectively.
“Strictly speaking, Macy is not trying to be harsh intentionally; it’s more that she can’t care about other things. That pure passion is frightening. When she sets her mind on one thing, nothing else exists for her.”
That firm heart was resilient—unwavering even against obstacles.
“From making her your mistress, it seems you pushed her despite knowing her nature. But I think that was only possible because Macy loved the Duke. If she’d only hated you, she would have run away the moment you tried to make her your mistress. Like she did now.”
Benedict couldn’t understand why Macy left, as there had been no sign of it when they were together. Macy wasn’t impulsive enough to set fire and run away on a whim.
But that wasn’t the important point now.
“Macy’s only goal now is to escape the Duke. If she’s in Obelit, she’s still wanted and will be caught soon. I doubt Macy is unaware of this. That’s why I worry she might take a bad step.”
Benedict’s concerns about Macy making an extreme choice made snese.
His mouth was dry every day because of that anxiety. Meanwhile, the very person who caused this situation acted so casually.
Benedict felt frustrated and helpless.
“This isn’t the time to relax, Duke. Don’t wait until you lose her completely and shed tears of blood. Search for her now.”
“…”
“This is partly because I want to save Macy, but also for your sake.”
Rubens’s face stiffened. He had grown quite serious.

Rubens woke up. He pushed aside the curtain and sat on the edge of the bed. As Kronen drew the curtain, Rubens rubbed his stiff neck to loosen his muscles.
Strangely, his back ached. Ever since his conversation with Benedict, the Name on his back had been bothering him.
“Bring me something to see my back.”
“A mirror, Your Grace?”
“Yes. A mirror that shows my back.”
Kronen quickly brought a mirror large enough to be held with two hands.
Rubens turned his back and moved his head to look into the mirror.
If Macy was dead, the Name would disappear and someone else’s name would be engraved.
But Macy Horton’s name was still clearly etched on his back.
‘Right. The idea that Macy is dead is nonsense.’
Rubens knew Macy was pure and passionate. She was braver and more decisive than expected.
She left the house without a plan despite having nothing, and acted like she would take her life any time if her friends weren’t safe.
But they had a child together. Macy wouldn’t ignore that child. Benedict probably didn’t know about Macy’s pregnancy when he said those things.
As always, Macy would eventually submit to Rubens and return. She would come back into his arms.
Worrying about something that won’t happen is pointless.
Macy will not die. As long as the child she carries lives, there’s no way she can escape him.
Rubens muttered to himself that it was nonsense and pushed away the ominous thoughts.
