Chapter 232
“Damn it. Why Macy…”
But something was wrong.
He knew if Macy died, the Name would vanish and the next Name master’s name would appear. Yet no new Name had formed.
“Bring me a specialist who knows about the Names.”
“Yes, at once.”
Kronen soon returned with a Name specialist.
“When a Name’s bearer is critically ill, symptoms like this can occur.”
“Is that true?”
“I’ve only read about it, so I can’t be sure. If the bearer lives, the Name should reappear soon; if they die, the next bearer’s Name will emerge.”
“Ha…”
That meant Macy was not dead yet.
Praying earnestly for Macy’s Name to manifest again, Rubens waited with a heart drying up in anguish.
After about three or four days—
“Your Grace! Macy’s Name has reappeared!”
Along with the familiar burning sensation, the Name “Macy Horton” was re-engraved on his back.
But things couldn’t just stay as they were. Macy’s life had truly been at risk.
What had she been doing to be caught between life and death?
The thought that she might have been involved in something dangerous briefly crossed Rubens’s mind—soon replaced by a dark premonition.
‘What if she put herself in danger?’
Macy had harmed herself even while at the Bayatten mansion. And she did it unconsciously.
Knowing she was carrying Rubens’s child, Macy might not have ended her life intentionally but was certainly more mentally strained and troubled than before.
She had struggled to escape him, yet the life linked to him still grew in her womb. Perhaps she unintentionally harmed herself again, nearly losing her life.
Or, as Benedict said, she might have wanted to break free from Rubens so badly she didn’t care about the child and tried to end her life.
“Damn it…”
Rubens was confused. Macy wasn’t someone who would make such a choice.
This situation pointed to Rubens being wrong, and Benedict’s words being completely right.
Macy wasn’t someone to weaken simply because she was carrying his child. She had stepped back because she liked him, not because of the child.
She would never return just because she was pregnant.
“Find Macy.”
As soon as he realized this, Rubens frantically searched for her.
He couldn’t just wait for the police.
He ordered his household knights to find Macy Horton and personally scouted outside his domain for a while.
But he couldn’t find her.
He wondered if she had fled to a neighboring country but found nothing.
He even sent a crazy letter to the Emperor saying he’d accept a marriage proposal if Macy were found, but Macy was still gone—
Only her Name remained, leaving no trace in the world.
“Ugh!”
“Your Grace! A doctor! I’ll bring a doctor!”
Rubens’s health worsened from extreme stress.
The headaches caused by lack of Name treatment made daily life unbearable. Sometimes, he felt internal pain twisting like his organs were being crushed.
The speed and type of Name curses vary greatly from person to person.
During the year separated from Macy, Rubens painfully realized his cursed body worsened rapidly without treatment.
Naturally, his outdoor activities decreased, and he suffered alone from the Name curse, crying out Macy’s name.
He increased his visits to the Bayatten mansion, hoping to catch even a faint trace of her and eventually staying there.
No matter how much he squeezed pillows or buried his nose in them, Macy’s scent was gone.
The barren air and the fact that he was alone were the only things clear—he couldn’t leave.
Though he often felt an overwhelming urge to hang himself before the Name disappeared, the faint hope of finding Macy kept him alive.
A year had passed that way.
