Chapter 236
“Did you see Duke Krygen?”
“Yes. He’s lost a lot of weight. Still handsome but so pale it’s pitiful.”
The Lettern mansion was busier than usual welcoming the family head after a long time.
Maids chatted while prepping vegetables. Anna listened in and peeled carrots alongside them.
“He must be suffering terribly. The news was all true.”
“Yeah. And on top of that, Madam died too. Our Duke’s life seems really miserable.”
“Sigh…”
Was this loyalty or cluelessness? The staff at the Krygen estate were full of sympathy.
Who’s pitying who? Who’s miserable? The truly miserable one is someone else.
Anna, unable to resist curiosity, had secretly gone to watch the funeral.
The maids’ words about his pale face were true.
Though he’d always looked sharp, the Duke now looked almost ghostly. His gaunt face and sharp features screamed illness.
Macy hadn’t looked this bad even after missing a year of name treatment.
Had he truly suffered heartbreak?
Had he really loved Macy?
Did he regret what he’d done to her?
Anna hoped so, even though his haggard appearance gave nothing away.
If Macy ever wanted to live again, the Duke was the only one who could break the curse.
Maybe he could still save Macy.
But she doubted Macy would want treatment even if the Duke regretted it now.
“I suppose he must be back by now. I should bring him some tea.”
“No, the Duke hasn’t come yet.”
“Didn’t you say he was coming to the main estate right after the funeral?”
The maid, about to serve tea, was interrupted by Anna’s troubled thoughts.
“He stopped and turned toward the annex. Maria, is something wrong there?”
“What? The Duke went to the annex?”
“Yes. He looked urgent.”
“Maria!”
Anna dropped her kitchen work and rushed out.
“Gasp, pant.”
Why was this happening? How did he know Macy was there?
Her heart was pounding. They couldn’t get discovered like this.
If found, that devilish man would drag her dear friend into that hellish estate.
‘Macy. No…!’
Anna hurried into the annex and went straight up to Macy’s room.
“Macy!”
She threw open the door and looked around.
“Anna?”
Despite the panic, Macy was sitting calmly on the bed, looking at Anna.
“Has Duke Krygen come here?”
“Oh, so that’s why you came in such a hurry?”
“He came?!”
“Yes, but he passed by safely.”
Macy was as shocked as anyone when she first heard from Dia that Duke Krygen was coming to the annex.
He searched the rooms thoroughly, then found the baby’s room.
Before he reached Macy’s room, Dia had sent another maid disguised as Anna to avoid Anna being caught.
But he ordered to be shown to the maid’s mother’s room too.
Macy hid in the attached bathroom, and an elderly servant posed as the maid’s mother.
“Are you the mother of this maid?”
“Yes, I am.”
“……”
“Why would a noble come all the way here…? I apologize for not greeting you properly as I have difficulty walking.”
“Enough.”
Eren reportedly looked around the room once and then left.
Though Macy didn’t see his face, hearing his voice briefly was enough to chill her to the bone, fearing she had almost been caught.
“Thank goodness. Truly, thank goodness.”
Anna sighed in relief after hearing the situation from Macy.
“But how did he get here?”
“They say he followed the sound of the baby crying.”
“That’s impossible. No matter how loudly the baby cried, you couldn’t hear it near the main house.”
“Exactly. It’s strange…”
Anna, who regularly went between the main house and annex, knew well that the crying could not be heard from the main house.
How did he know?
Anyway, it was fortunate that Macy wasn’t discovered.
“So, the Duke saw your baby?”
“Yes. Anna, by the way….does the baby resemble him much?”
“Hm?”
