Chapter 240
“Macy… tried to kill herself?”
“Yes. She’s harmed herself several times in her sleep.”
Rubens’ face instantly stiffened.
“It was so severe before giving birth that she nearly died from self-harm. I sleep with her every night, but if she stays close to the one who made her do that, her condition will only worsen…”
Hearing this, he recalled the day Macy’s Name disappeared for a time.
“When exactly was that?”
“Shortly after Macy left the Bayatten mansion. Maybe about a month later…”
The timing matched perfectly.
“Did Macy know she was pregnant then?”
“Yes. I told her the day she left.”
“Macy doesn’t seem to have seen the baby yet.”
“That’s right. The time to terminate it had passed, so she couldn’t, but if she could, she would have. Macy has no affection for the child.”
“…”
Rubens had deliberately withheld the pregnancy news, fearing she might try to abandon the baby.
But he never imagined she would actually try, and so quickly after escaping him.
He remembered what Macy said when she mistook him for Anna—that she avoided seeing the baby because she didn’t want to develop an attachment.
She wasn’t dead yet, but was already prepared for it. That’s why she tried to kill herself without hesitation when confronted with Rubens.
‘She’s calm now, but once she comes to, she’ll probably try to take her life again.’
Facing the woman he thought he might have to kill himself, Rubens could only stroke her gently, overcome with emotion.
He didn’t want to lose her again. He wanted to save her by any means.
But with no affection even for her child, and with family obviously meaningless to her, and now her friends’ safety assured, Rubens could think of no way to stop her.
If she tried to bite her tongue again, he’d be forced to shove his hand in like today, helplessly.
His mind went blank. He didn’t know what to do. He had never felt so lost before.
He truly felt like a complete fool overnight.
“Please, Duke, don’t take Macy away. I beg you. Please let her go.”
“If I let her go, will Macy stay here? Wouldn’t her condition worsen if she stays here?”
“Huh?”
The confident force that seemed ready to take her just moments ago suddenly weakened.
“How far has the rigidity progressed? Her arms seemed barely able to move. Has facial rigidity started? Was she already critical before seeing me? How much longer can Macy live?”
A flood of questions came nonstop. Anna wasn’t sure which to answer first, then asked gently:
“Duke, do you want Macy to live too?”
“Of course I want her to live. I’ll assign the best doctor in Obelit if I have to, and I’ll do whatever it takes to make Macy want to live.”
He would give his own life if it meant saving her. Because if Macy disappeared, Rubens would have no reason to live either.
He couldn’t even imagine a world without her.
The moment another’s Name appeared on his back, Rubens would follow her to the afterlife to find her again.
“You know Macy well, right? Isn’t she still alive because of you? What should I do?”
Grasping Anna’s arms like she was his last hope, Rubens asked.
Her silence made him anxious, seeing his lips trembling.
For Anna, this frazzled side of the Duke was unfamiliar.
“Will you really do anything?”
“Yes. So tell me quickly. I’ll do anything.”
“Even if Macy can live but can’t stay by your side?”
Rubens’ grip on Anna’s arm trembled.
“If you don’t demand anything in return for saving Macy, I’ll try to persuade her. Otherwise, I won’t do anything.”
They both knew the past miseries had to be stopped at all costs. Anna wanted Macy to live but didn’t want her to live unhappily.
