Chapter 242
Eren frowned, annoyed by Macy’s rejection, and stepped back to keep distance.
“If the baby’s a burden, I’ll raise it. You just live your life.”
“Try touching my child. That baby is mine. It has nothing to do with you.”
“If you want to take responsibility, you need to live first. So, are you going to accept my offer?”
“…”
Macy pursed her lips silently. She didn’t understand why things kept going this way.
Eren’s offer wasn’t bad, in fact, for Macy in her current state, it was an ideal condition.
But—
“Why are you doing this now?”
Macy had already given up on life. She’d run from him and even rejected her own child.
His sudden offer to let her go felt suspicious.
“Didn’t your friend say? I regretted it.”
He spoke in a soothing tone.
“After you disappeared, I realized how precious you were.”
Macy’s face contorted in disgust.
“Insomnia, headaches… living was no life at all.”
“So you only needed me because you were sick?”
“Did you think I’d miss you or something?”
He sneered, twisting his mouth.
By then, his gaunt, pale appearance was clear. His eyes bloodshot as if he hadn’t slept in ages, his skin dry and unhealthy.
“If you want to hear those words, just say so.”
“Enough. Don’t jump to conclusions.”
Eren clearly didn’t love Macy. The rumors were all lies.
He had given up his obsessive possession out of his own sickness. The pain from the Name curse was unbearable, which explained why he desperately searched for Macy.
Oddly, when she realized he wasn’t acting out of emotion but convenience, the discomfort in Macy’s heart eased slightly.
After what happened at Bayatten mansion, Macy only grew more horrified of Eren’s affectionate words and acts.
It was far better than his ridiculous claims that he did it all out of love.
Eren remained selfish, and their relationship held no hope.
Though disillusioning and heavy, swallowing that bitter truth brought a slight relief.
“But please give me some time to think.”
Still, Macy couldn’t fully trust Eren. The sudden situation left her confused.
She had no plans for how to live, having long stopped clinging to life. Now, the vague fear of what life might look like if she survived overwhelmed her.
“Fine. Even if you reject me, I’ll respect you. Though I will ask to be buried in the same coffin as you.”
“What does that mean?”
He made a strange expression and muttered:
“This is your only chance to escape me. If you die, I’ll follow you to the afterlife.”
“…Are you joking in this situation?”
“Think this is a joke?”
He chuckled coldly, the familiar sneer seeming oddly hollow.
“If it’s a joke, try refusing. Honestly, I don’t hate that side of you either.”
“…”
Maybe that was why Macy couldn’t say a word.
His bloodshot smile was stained with a familiar yet different kind of madness.

The next day, an astonishing headline filled the front page of the morning paper:
<True culprit of last year’s Hallain Mountain arson case revealed: Duke Krygen.>
Eren had actually confessed to starting the fire himself.
“What’s this?”
“I found you, there’s no reason to keep your name on the wanted list. I admitted to the arson because I did it.”
“…”
Macy wondered why he chose to resolve things this way.
No matter how wealthy the Krygen family was, paying the fine shouldn’t have been a problem. It would damage the family’s reputation.
She expected at least some financial compensation instead of letting him take the blame.
Still, it was undeniably good news for Macy.
“I’ll also stay in the annex from now on. If you want to say something, call me through Dia.”
With that, he left, as if finishing his business.
‘Still feels unfair. Someone else had to live on the run for a year because of this…’
