Chapter 271
Half of his head was wrapped in bandages. Through his thin gown, bandages around his chest were faintly visible.
Kallen Krygen had stabbed Eren’s waist with a dagger and slashed his face. Taken off balance by the sudden attack, Eren fell backward, hitting his head on the floor and bleeding.
When a pool of bright red blood formed behind his head, the shock was overwhelming…
That incident taught them that when someone is too shocked, they become helpless. Macy, standing dazed, only regained composure as Eren was carried away on a stretcher.
“No! He can’t die like this!”
“Calm down! Who is this? Let go!”
“Macy, it’s going to be alright.”
Kronen approached the desperate and weeping Macy.
“You know better than anyone he’s not someone to die so easily.”
“B-But… he’s losing so much blood…”
Seeing Eren’s black hair soaked in red, tears streamed uncontrollably from Macy’s eyes.
“We’ll contact you as soon as he regains consciousness.”
Eren was immediately rushed to the central hospital in the capital. The stab wound in his waist was quickly sutured and the surgery went well, but he was diagnosed with a concussion.
Fortunately, it wasn’t a major brain injury but a mild concussion. Still, he remained unconscious for over two weeks.
If it dragged on, he might be declared brain dead—essentially becoming vegetative.
Hearing this, Macy couldn’t just wait silently at home and went to the Krygen estate.
Ottilie Krygen forbade Macy’s entry, but Macy had to see with her own eyes that Eren was still breathing.
With suspicions about his background, the mansion was no longer a safe place for Eren.
Fortunately, he was still breathing, but remained unconscious.
‘Why is this happening to you…?’
Macy couldn’t believe her eyes. The man who had always seemed so strong was lying there pale and lifeless.
The thought that she might never see those vivid blue eyes again brought tears to her own.
She hated him and still resented him. She wished that Eren, the one who hurt her, would get hurt in return.
That was why she told him to die and wanted to sever all ties.
But she never truly wished him ill. She never sincerely wanted him to die.
She wanted to thank him when the trial ended. And apologize. For painting his portrait without permission, for saying words that intentionally wounded him.
But…
“Why do you just lie there…?”
The thought that she might never hear his voice again made all her thoughts evaporate.
The sight of Eren, limp like a corpse, was unfamiliar. She wished he would just wake up and stop making her imagine worst-case scenarios.
She was willing to listen to anything if only he would open those eyes.
“So please, wake up. You really are a terrible person to the end… If you leave me like this, what am I supposed to do?”
Macy held Rubens’s hand and cried herself to exhaustion beside him, then fell asleep.
When she woke, Dia brought her a meal, and she calmed her hunger but cried again seeing Eren.
Days passed without her knowing. Suddenly, she felt a gaze and looked up— Eren’s eyes were open.
His expression was blank, devoid of emotion.
“Eren? You’re awake?!”
Macy gasped and held his hand tighter. Eren rolled his eyes and silently stared at her hand.
Something about his attitude was odd.
‘Could he have partial memory loss?’
Even mild concussions could cause such symptoms, she’d heard.
The longer his silence lasted, the faster Macy’s heart raced with dread. His lips slowly parted, and a low, hoarse voice came out sluggishly.
“What time is it now?”
“Uh, it’s… 3:32 PM.”
Macy steadied herself, checking the clock. This was not the time to panic like this.
“I’ll call the doctor! Please wait a moment—”
“No.”
He tightly gripped Macy’s hand.
“Don’t go, Macy.”
His voice clearly said her name.
“Do you… remember me?”
“Of course. Why wouldn’t I remember you?”
“Then why… when I woke up, did you just stare?”
“I couldn’t believe you were really here beside me.”
He gazed intently at her hand he held so tightly.
“Holding my hand so firmly. So…”
As he spoke, Eren suddenly pressed his forehead, wincing in pain.
