Chapter 148
“To live with Seol Suhyeon, you’re suggesting I give you money?”
“No, why say things like that? Look, just like back then, if you could help my business a little, Suhyeon would be happy, and you would be too…”
“Do you think Seol Suhyeon would be happy?”
At Jeonghan’s pointed question, Seol Hee-nam answered without hesitation.
“Of course. She’s my daughter, after all.”
Jeonghan let out a cold laugh.
What nonsense was this man spouting? A man who had threatened her with a knife to hand over alimony was now rambling about business help and happiness?
Jeonghan gave a short laugh and looked at Seol Hee-nam’s face.
“Do you know why I married Seol Suhyeon?”
“W-well, because Suhyeon is pretty…”
Seol Hee-nam stammered, rolling his eyes.
“Pretty. And then what?”
Jeonghan’s cold gaze bore into Seol Hee-nam.
“And then… I mean…”
“Because she was from a family that was falling apart?”
Jeonghan said the words Seol Hee-nam couldn’t bring himself to say.
“And because I could manipulate her like a doll?”
“Hey, that’s your own opinion, isn’t it? I never said a thing about that! There are so many reasons people get married. What does morality matter? Isn’t that right?”
Trying to smooth things over so as not to upset Jeonghan, Seol Hee-nam quickly spoke defensively, but Jeonghan bowed his head and let out a low chuckle.
When he raised his face again, there was no trace of laughter.
Seol Hee-nam flinched at the cold look on his face as Jeonghan said,
“Because Seol Suhyeon is your daughter.”
At the icy tone in his voice, Seol Hee-nam’s eyes widened.
“What did you just say…?”
Jeonghan glared with an expression that showed he didn’t understand.
“Seol Hee-nam’s daughter is Seol Suhyeon, and that’s why we got married. Because you’re the one who killed my parents.”
“……!”
Seol Hee-nam’s mouth fell open.
“W-what do you mean by that…?”
Jeonghan continued to stare at Seol Hee-nam’s trembling eyes and spoke in a low voice.
“There’s no way you don’t remember. You came to the orphanage to find me.”
“!!!!!”
Seol Hee-nam’s eyes widened in shock.
Creeeak.
Suhyeon parked her car in the alley near Jeonghan’s house and hurriedly got out.
“Should I call him now?”
Suhyeon took out her cellphone and began walking toward Jeonghan’s front gate when she saw two figures standing in front of the gate.
‘Is that Manager Joo?’
Suhyeon paused, then quickly hid behind the SUV parked in front of her.
“I’ll wait until Manager Joo leaves and call him,”
The thought, trying to calm her racing heart as she watched Jeonghan from her hiding spot.
Suhyeon’s heart pounded hard as she listened.
What if I told you I love you, Do Jeonghan? How would you respond? Would you be happy? Or would you scold me for saying it too late?
Her chest felt tight as she took a deep breath.
“That’s a misunderstanding, I tell you!”
The sudden voice startled her. Suhyeon quickly peeked out of the car, a chill running through her.
What was that?
She could see Jeonghan’s back and a man standing in front of him—a man she recognized instantly.
Seol Hee-nam?
Suhyeon’s eyes widened in shock.
Why is Seol Hee-nam here?
“Misunderstanding?”
The voice sent a shiver down her spine. It was cold and unnervingly sinister—unlike any voice she had ever heard from Jeonghan. It sounded as though it was pulling her into the depths of some dark abyss.
What kind of misunderstanding?
The voice continued, sharp and menacing:
“Are you saying you didn’t steal my father’s technology?”
Suhyeon froze. Her entire body tensed as those words hung in the air, and her breathing quickened.
What does he mean by that?
The words felt like a hammer striking the very foundation of her understanding.
“Steal from me?!”
Seol Hee-nam shouted angrily, his voice cutting through the tense air. Suhyeon’s throat tightened as she watched him.
Do Jeonghan’s father’s technology was stolen? … Seol Hee-nam?
The pieces clicked into place in her mind. Could this be the debt he mentioned? Was this what Jeonghan had been hiding all along?
“That’s not true. I was your father’s business partner and friend! It was done with his consent—”
But before he could finish, Do Jeonghan’s icy voice cut through the air like a blade:
“Or did you kill my father to do so?”
Seol Hee-nam froze mid-sentence, his face paling.
“……!”
Suhyeon’s eyes widened in shock.
The words felt like they had come from the depths of a nightmare, and the cold in Jeonghan’s voice sent a wave of fear washing over her.
He killed his father?
The implication lingered in the air, heavy and suffocating.
