“Life and death aren’t determined by humans.”

He locked eyes with Seol Hee-nam and spoke in a low, steady voice.

“…..”

Seol Hee-nam scowled at Jeonghan.

“They were destined to die.”

Repeating Seol Hee-nam’s earlier words with icy precision, Jeonghan’s eyes blazed as he stared at him down.

“Say that in court, word for word, on the day you receive your death sentence. Go on, try it.”

At the mention of the death penalty, Seol Hee-nam’s lips curled into a crooked smile.

“You do realize South Korea abolished the death penalty ages ago, don’t you? Model prisoners even get released early.”

At Seol Hee-nam’s words, the detectives’ faces hardened.

“……”

Jeonghan silently stared at Seol Hee-nam, his gaze cold and unwavering. Seol Hee-nam smirked and chuckled.

“What a great country we live in, huh? Only the dead have reason to complain. Long live the Republic of Korea!”

“That lunatic!”

One of the detectives, unable to hold back any longer, stood up abruptly and pointed a finger at Seol Hee-nam, shouting furiously.

Meanwhile, Jeonghan, who had been watching Seol Hee-nam with an icy, unchanging expression, slowly curved his lips into a faint smile.

Pause.

The sight made Seol Hee-nam’s smug grin freeze in place.

Locking eyes with him, Jeonghan spoke in a low, deliberate tone.

“Let’s see if this is a good country for you, too.”

Without another glance, Jeonghan turned and walked out.

Taewoo and Lee Seon-hee followed close behind him.

Jeonghan exited through the door to the investigation team’s office. Outside, Suhyeon sat waiting. A security guard stood by her side, keeping watch.

As soon as Jeonghan saw her, the frigid coldness in his expression softened, replaced by a trace of warmth.

“Jeonghan.”

Suhyeon’s face, though still bearing a bandage from her injuries, showed clear signs of recovery.

She approached him and asked,

“How did it go?”

“Why are you here? I told you not to come.”

Despite his words, Jeonghan’s eyes softened as they settled on her, his expression gentler.

“I was a little worried.”

Suhyeon knew well just how demonic a person Seol Hee-nam was. She had rushed over, afraid of what he might do to Jeonghan if cornered.

“It’s all taken care of, so there’s nothing to worry about.”

Jeonghan placed a hand on the back of her head and kissed her forehead as he spoke.

“Ah…”

Caught off guard, Suhyeon hesitated and glanced around.

Chief Joo and the bodyguard, familiar with the scene, tactfully averted their gazes.

In the meantime, Jeonghan’s lips brushed against the bridge of her nose for a second time.

Suhyeon’s face flushed slightly as she looked up at him and asked,

“Are you okay?”

“As you can see.”

His charming smile gave no hint of the man who had just faced Seol Hee-nam moments earlier.

‘…Thank goodness.’

Suhyeon’s face showed relief.

Jeonghan held Suhyeon’s hand and said.

“Now we just have to wait for the trial.”

“Yes.”

Suhyeon nodded.

The devil would pay for his sins. That’s what Jeonghan had been preparing for all this time.

When Suhyeon, who believed that, looked up at him, Jeonghan held her hand.

“Let’s go.”

Jeonghan took Suhyeon’s hand and headed toward the elevator.

The bodyguard, watching the scene, spoke to the bodyguards outside through his radio.

“They are coming out now.”

After stepping into the elevator, Jeonghan firmly wrapped his arm around Suhyeon’s shoulder.

Suhyeon leaned her head quietly against his shoulder.

When the elevator door opened, Chief Joo and the bodyguard led the way to the entrance.

Flash! Flash! Flash!

Reporters burst their camera flashes from all directions.

“!”

Blinded for a moment, Suhyeon squinted her eyes, and Jeonghan opened his long coat, hiding Suhyeon inside.

He began walking, holding her close as if to protect her.

The waiting bodyguards cleared the reporters out of the way, opening a path ahead.

“Move! Step aside!”

Through the bodyguards, reporters thrust their phones with recording functions and microphones forward.

“Is it true that Ms. Seol Hee-nam, in collusion with Executive Director Do Cheoljun, is the serial killer?”

“Is it also true that Director Do Jeonghan himself is involved?”

“Was your former mother-in-law, Ms. Oh Kyung-hee, murdered by Seol Hee-nam?”

“Please, just give us a comment!”

“How much did you know about Executive Director Do Cheoljun’s embezzlement? They say he started using Drxgs as a teenager. Were you aware of this too?”

Breaking through the reporters, the bodyguard opened the car door.

Jeonghan escorted Suhyeon into the car first and then followed her inside.

Chief Joo, standing in front of the car, addressed the reporters.

“We plan to hold a press conference tomorrow, so please save your questions until then.”

“Still, just one comment…!”

“Step back!”

Bodyguards blocked the reporters trying to break through the barricade.
In the midst of this, Chief Joo circled around the hood, quickly climbed into the driver’s seat, and spoke.
