Chapter 48
“Rather than hate…”
Anne, who had been talking easily, trailed off for a moment. She had never hated Logan. Honestly, even the pathetic sides he sometimes showed were, if she thought about it, all because of her, so how could she resent him.
If anything, she always felt sorry, and sorry again. That was why she hoped he could be happy now. Wouldn’t that be possible with Marilyn.
Anne thought quickly again. If she started talking about the original story, he would think she was insane. Then what should she say so Logan would understand? So that he would understand that breaking the engagement was truly the best path for him.
After hesitating, Anne glanced at Logan. He still had his eyes covered and didn’t move at all. Seeing his slumped shoulders made her uneasy. Anne spoke again, a little hastily.
“Um, well…”
Logan’s shoulders suddenly trembled. Looking again, it wasn’t just his shoulders, his back was trembling slightly as well.
Huh? Anne blinked. Wait, no way. No, that couldn’t be right. It must be her imagination. But the moment something clear glistened on his cheek beneath his palm, she could no longer doubt her eyes.
“…Are you crying?”
Logan lowered his hand and looked straight at her. His blue eyes were soaked, like the sea under rain.
Anne’s eyes widened enormously. For real?
But the shock wasn’t over yet. In a heavy, damp voice, Logan declared,
“I like you, Anne Agnes.”
Anne stared blankly. She was so stunned she couldn’t speak. W-W-W-What did you just say?
Was this a dream? Or was she hearing things? Anne tapped both of her ears alternately with her palms. Something had definitely gone wrong, either with her ears or her head. Or both.
At her absurd reaction, Logan drove the point in again.
“I said I like you.”
Anne let out a hollow breath and smacked her own head with her fist. It hurt. So it wasn’t a dream. But instead of feeling moved by the sudden confession, she burst out angrily.
“No, look here!”
Logan looked at her with a wounded expression. The tears that had just dried gathered again at the corners of his eyes. For him, it was a confession made after letting go of everything.
But Anne’s reaction was beyond extreme, it was disastrous. She spoke rapidly, almost spitting her words.
“No, you don’t like me! Ah, was it because that night felt too good? You can try that with other women and—”
“Stop saying disgusting things.”
Logan covered his face with his hand again. Anne immediately shut her mouth. Honestly, that last comment had gone a bit too far. But once again, Logan was the one who backed down first.
“…I didn’t mean you were disgusting.”
Anne had never taken it that way in the first place. But in Logan’s mind, the train of pessimism was already racing toward the final stop. In a voice so sorrowful it almost sounded desperate, like a condemned man awaiting execution, he continued.
“Sleeping with other men… I’ll forgive that. No, it’s not something you need forgiveness for. It must have been because I wasn’t capable enough. But from now on, at least, please don’t let others see it.”
“No. I. I. I…”
Anne thumped her chest in frustration. The misunderstanding had been her intention, yet now it was so suffocating she wanted to clear it up immediately. What on earth was happening?
Logan glared at her through the gaps between his fingers. His eyes looked like those of a sulking child.
“I’m going to marry you no matter what. I won’t break the engagement.”
After saying that, Logan lowered his head deeply. I like Anne Agnes. And that was why he felt humiliated. Why, just why do I like Anne Agnes.
Anne stared at the top of his head, letting out helpless breaths. She could hardly believe it, but the parts of his ear and neck she could see were bright red. Leaning forward, she asked,
“Are you really doing this because you like me?”
Since she didn’t sound like she was teasing him, Logan nodded obediently. The reason he didn’t want to break the engagement was simple. Because he had feelings for Anne Agnes.
Anne immediately asked again.
“Why?”
Logan himself wanted to ask the same thing. What on earth had she done to him.
