Chapter 13
“Broom!”
The moment Fay saw the doll’s twisted face, she shouted for her broom. After all, she still remembered being helplessly dragged underground by this thing before, so she wasn’t about to try fighting, running came first.
Luckily, the broom zoomed over from nearby. It must have been waiting close since its owner wasn’t around when it was first summoned.
With a swift motion, Fay leaped onto the broom.
“Get on!”
She held out her hand, and Alnazir just stared blankly at her and the broom.
“Heehee! Stop right there!”
The doll, its eyes glowing red, jumped high into the air. It was clearly aiming to smash the floor and trap them underground again.
Unable to delay it any longer, Fay grabbed Alnazir’s hand and hauled him onto the broom.
“Hold on tight!”
Before she’d even finished speaking, the broom shot forward. Alnazir, thrown backward by the force, grabbed the cloth Fay had wrapped around herself so he wouldn’t fall off.
But since it was only loosely tied, it threatened to slip off entirely, so he ended up wrapping his arms around her waist instead.
The warmth of her waist, chest, and stomach seeped into him. Maybe that was it. Being in this human body felt strange, as if his limbs were far away.
But now, for the first time, he started to feel like himself. The chill that had followed him since becoming human was fading, replaced by her warmth. Without thinking, Alnazir rested his cheek on Fay’s shoulder and snuggled a little closer.
But while Alnazir was relaxed, Fay was busy. The broom was so much heavier with a second rider that it wouldn’t go nearly as fast.
“You won’t get away!”
On top of that, the doll started hurling things at them with magic. Fay had to weave through the air, dodging all sorts of flying obstacles.
Then—bam! A flying skull hit the broom. Fortunately, only the tip was damaged, and the broom’s main shaft held, but it was a close call.
Maybe it was time to fight back. The doll was fast enough to dodge Zynie’s attacks earlier, but Fay figured it was worth a shot. She spun the broom around and prepared to cast a spell.
“Oh, so you want to fight now? Dream on!”
The doll raised its hand and tossed a fireball their way. Seriously—who ever heard of a guardian doll that could use magic? That felt like cheating.
Fay barely managed to dodge the incoming attack and swung her staff. But the doll was fast and small, dodging easily and firing off its own fireballs without hesitation.
Maybe running away really was the better idea.
She was about to cast a smoke spell to cover their escape when, all of a sudden, the doll disappeared. The flying debris stopped too. Everything was eerily quiet.
Confused, Fay glanced around—until she saw Alnazir holding something in one hand.
“Let go of me, you filthy naked pervert! How dare you lay a hand on me—I’ll kill you!”
The doll squirmed in his grip, but a shadow fell over its face.
“Why does this thing keep coming after you? Is it trying to challenge your authority?”
When Alnazir’s eyes met the doll’s, the doll broke out in a cold sweat.
“Wh-what is this power? No, it can’t be… Wh-who… what are you…?”
The voice was filled with agony, though Alnazir didn’t seem to be squeezing that hard.
“This is pointless. I can’t even understand what it’s saying.”
“Aaah…!”
With a dull snap, the doll’s neck broke, and its body dropped to the floor. Fay’s jaw fell open at the sight.
“As expected, everything ruled by a witch is as pathetically weak as you.”
Alnazir tossed the doll’s body to the ground. Sensing her stare, he looked up to see Fay gaping at him in shock.
“Was I not supposed to break it?”
“No, it’s not that, just…”
Fay struggled to find words. After all the trouble that doll had given her, seeing it fall apart so easily left her feeling strangely empty.
She thought of Zynie—a genius who’d become a stronger witch at a much younger age than Fay herself. Maybe a genius invoked really could turn into a human like it was nothing.
Finally, her suspicions were resolved. With the mystery solved and no more dolls in their way, Fay took off into the sky.
As soon as they left the tower, they could hear singing in the distance. Apparently, the party was still going strong. Fay chuckled to herself, glancing up to see that the constellations hadn’t moved much at all.
“So much happened, but I guess it hasn’t even been an hour.”
Back in peaceful Aldehallow, the tension drained from her body. Her arms and legs felt heavy, and every muscle ached.
“We made it out… so what now?”
