Fay scowled, feeling like she might die from how infuriating this sly octopus was. She wanted to scoff and say his fake flirting had no effect at all—but before she knew it, her mind was wandering, imagining what it might be like if he touched her even more.

This was a problem. Heat slowly rose up through her body. Get a grip, she shouted at herself internally. But it was as if her brain had short-circuited. Her throat went dry, and she couldn’t help but look at him.

“Where’s your thank-you?”

Alnazir brought the hand he was holding up to his lips, letting his breath linger over her fingers—just barely brushing her skin.

Fay held her breath, trying not to let any emotion show. Her cheeks were burning so hot, it was obvious without anyone even touching her. She could feel danger—if she didn’t push him away now, something was going to happen. But for some reason, her body refused to move.

Why can’t I do anything? she wondered in frustration. And then, from deep inside, a voice whispered.

Don’t you want to see what he does next? The quiet whisper sounded both like her and not like her at all.

This is getting ridiculous. She must be seriously deprived. Next time she goes out, she’s just going to find the cutest guy she sees and ask him out—someone who’s human, inside and out, not some octopus in disguise.

Trying to snap herself out of it, Fay deliberately spoke in an icy voice, hoping to quash her inappropriate fantasies.

“So you admit—you were behind all that trouble outside the house.”

Alnazir only smiled in reply, his lips twitching ever so slightly.

To Fay, it looked like he was grinning at her, as if to say, Go ahead, act cold if you want. I know you’re not fooling anyone.

“What are you so smug about?”

“I thought you had no idea. For someone who blushes so easily, you’re actually quite sharp, witch.”

“Being clever has nothing to do with blushing.”

It was just hot outside today.

She tried to pull her hand away, but Alnazir caught her slipping fingers and pressed them down onto the sheet of paper he’d been looking at.

“Witch Fay.”

Her name rolling off his lips and startling her. It was only then she noticed the paper he was holding was their contract—tucked away between the pages of the now-empty Invokeds to Handle With Caution.

How did he even find that?

“I couldn’t read these letters before, but I finally understand what they say now.”

“Wait, so you signed a contract without even knowing what it said?”

He seemed like a master manipulator who could tease his contractor for fun, but… this made him seem both cunning and naive at the same time.

“It didn’t matter what was written on a scrap of paper.”

“What if I’d written that you’d be my slave for life? Would that have changed your mind?”

“But you didn’t. The contract clearly says it lasts until the golden army is defeated.”

Alnazir released her hand, and the chilling sensation that had tingled down her spine faded instantly, replaced by a strange sense of longing.

Don’t be disappointed, she told herself sternly, shaking off the feeling with a snort.

“If you keep living so carelessly, it’ll come back to bite you someday.”

“Tch. Those intruders tried to steal my bed, you know.”

Alnazir changed the subject, apparently bored with her nagging.

“So that’s why you turned them all to stone? I told you not to touch anyone who came to the house.”

Fay crossed her arms. As she questioned him on why he didn’t keep his promise, he remained indifferent.

“I didn’t do anything until they tried to mess with my bed. I was behaving myself—just like you asked.”

“Whatever the reason, you still got involved in the end.”

Fay said firmly. Alnazir finally looked up from his book, his expression sour as he scowled at her.

What, am I supposed to apologize now? His eyes seemed to say.

Fay couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

“Just kidding. They were bandits. Good job.”

“Are you… praising me now?”

“Of course. You protected the house, didn’t you? You deserve it.”

“……”

“Honestly, I’m surprised. I didn’t know you could be so reliable. Maybe you’re more of a puppy.”

Than an octopus.

Alnazir silently watched Fay’s back as she laughed and walked away to the bathroom. It wasn’t the demands for an apology or the teasing compliments that bothered him, but being called a puppy.

No matter how many times he replayed it, he felt insulted. How dare she? he thought. He’d have to teach her a lesson.

He has to show her his true power.

Just then a sudden scream rang out from the bathroom.
