Chapter 3
A skull with glowing red eyes, a golden chalice that whispered curses, and even an eerily lifelike blonde doll—every corner of the North Tower was filled with things that radiated a sinister energy.
“Zynie?”
Fay gripped her staff tightly as she stepped inside, searching for Zynie. She sensed someone deeper in the tower, but it was so dark she couldn’t tell what was what.
“Fay, over here!”
Thankfully, Zynie’s voice rang out.
I really need to give her a proper scolding for doing something so reckless, Fay thought, making her way toward the sound. But Zynie, oblivious to Fay’s concern, just beamed and held up a book.
“I found it! This is it. There are ten names of high-level invokeds written here!”
If they could summon all of them, maybe they’d really stand a chance. Seeing the confident smile on the girl’s face, Fay was speechless.
“You… Seriously… Let’s just get out of here. We found what we needed, didn’t we?”
If she started lecturing now, it would just drag on. Better to get out first. Fay swallowed her words and grabbed Zynie’s arm. She wanted to spend as little time here as possible, especially since she’d sensed another presence for a while now.
“Running off so easily after barging in here uninvited?”
When you have a bad feeling, there’s usually a valid reason. The blonde doll that had left such a vivid impression on the way in now blocked their path.
Hee-hee-hee. Though its lips were sewn shut, a twisted laughter escaped the doll. It was truly a bizarre sight.
“Oh? Is a doll going to try and stop us now?”
Zynie swung her staff and fired off an attack spell. The doll dodged nimbly and sneered.
“No one leaves my house. Especially not thieves trying to steal my things!”
The doll floated high in the air and then came crashing down, stomping its shoe so hard the floor cracked open with a loud splintering sound.
Fay grabbed Zynie’s hand and bolted, dragging her away from both the creepy doll and the crumbling floor that was collapsing beneath them.
“Broom!”
Fay’s hand trembled as she called for her broom, but even at full speed, it would take five minutes to reach them from her bedroom. While the collapsing floor was gaining on them fast, much faster than they could run.
“Ahhh! My hair!”
“Zynie!”
To make matters worse, the doll grabbed Zynie by the hair. The moment they hesitated, the collapse caught up with them. The two witches, clutching hands, fell into the darkness, screaming.
They fell endlessly through pitch-black void, and then something whooshed past Fay’s face. Donovan had grabbed Zynie by the nape and was flying upward.
“Wait, Donovan! Fay is still falling! Don’t you dare say we’re too heavy! No, Fay! Fay!”
A tear, probably from Zynie, landed on Fay’s face as she plummeted.
Is this really the end?
Sensing her fate, Fay squeezed her eyes shut.
* * *
When she opened her eyes, all Fay could see was darkness. Looking up, there was no sign of the hole she’d fallen through, not even a sliver of light.
She tried calling her broom, but there was no response. It seemed she’d fallen very far from the surface.
To get her bearings, Fay pulled out her staff, previously rendered invisible, and cast a light spell. Slowly, the gloom receded.
Ornate marble pillars, a grand staircase, shattered angel statues… The place reminded her of the temples she’d seen as a child in the capital, and she frowned instinctively.
“Why is something like this under the North Tower?”
She picked up the book she’d dropped and carefully began to climb the stairs. She didn’t know where they led, but her only plan was to get back to the surface.
She climbed for a while, only to realize she was passing the same pillar again and again. As a test, she turned around and went back down, and within just a few steps she was right back where she’d started. The stairs were definitely enchanted.
So there was no way out on foot… What now?
Then, an idea occurred to her. She didn’t have her broom, but she did have the book of invokeds. If there was even one flying invoked like Donovan, maybe she could summon it and escape.
Fay opened the book immediately.
“Flight, flight… Ah! Here—Great Eagle!”
Her excitement was short-lived. Fay’s face fell as she saw how long the eagle’s name was.
It spanned two pages, and the pronunciation looked almost impossible.
All her confidence evaporated. Her tongue was already starting to seize up with nerves. And even if she managed to say it, could she really control a high-level invoked…?
